For the record it was not the guy that Dirt uses. Hey Ghost.. I think we spoke once before about Jim at Country Sportsman.. He's GREAT!! I hear they may be closing that store soon. I wonder where he'll go. My buddy manages D&D Sport and Marine on 23 North in West Milford. Maybe I can get him in there.. Oh by the way.. This is where this shitty butcher was recommened out of.. Motega is on his way to the butchers house right now.. We'll see what happens.. I feel bad for the guy. This is his first deer in like 2 seasons and this happens to him. I've never met a person in my life that likes Venison and uses every part of the deer more then Motega. He even cooks up the heart and liver in pressure cooker with onions.. MMMMMM

No, not you.   Motega, the hunter who started this post.

I got it back today... it was 26.5 pounds of meat. The deer field dressed at around 115. This seems a bit light to me. The meat appeared to be OK but is vacuum sealed. Whether or not it was actually meat from the buck I dropped off I suppose I will never know.

I insisted on the head and hide back and it didn't smell rancid, though I confess I don't know what a rancid hide smells like.

Lesson learned. Stick with a good butcher if you have one (thumbs up again to Jim from the Country Sportsman) even if it means not supporting a local guy or it is a few miles out of the way. And if you can do it yourself even better.

Again, if you use a butcher in West Milford feel free to PM me with his name and I'll tell you if it's the guy as long as you agree to respect the sensitivity of not publicly bashing someone's business. If enough guys have an issue word will get around without us crucifying a guy that isn't here to defend himself.

Just so we're clear, I think he's an asshole for sure, but he may be an asshole with family, marital, employment, drug, alcohol, or other problems. It's a sin to disrespect one of our greatest natural resources but he's got to answer to his maker for that. And as much as I love wild game, at the end of the day if a few lost pounds of meat is my biggest problem I'm still going to consider myself a lucky man.

Learn to do it yourself!!  It's not that hard and it adds to the enjoyment of the hunt.

For the little amount that I got back from him I probably could have eaten that much deer shit and be OK.
60% of the dressed weight is what I'm told is good by my friends out West that have been doing their own forever. We are just so used to NJ butchers ripping us off that we are happy to get 30-40 pounds off a deer. If done right this deer should have yielded at least 50 pounds and if done perfect over 65 pounds. I know these guys (well not this schmuck but most butchers) need to do a lot of deer in a hurry and I'm not faulting them for leaving a small amount on the bones, but giving a guy half his meat back is just plain stealing!

, 65 out of a 115 deer ain't happening, first is shot placement, gung ho' shoulder shooters that bust both shoulders get 5 #'s useable at best from shoulders. The average 110 # doe has a head, hide and bone weight of 60 #'s. That leaves 50 #'s,trim 5-7 #'s of body fat, now your' at 40-45 #'s, assuming the shoulders are not blasted to hell. Remember as the season rolls into winter, body weights go up with thicker coats and fat layers, so that 110 # doe could be 125-130 #'s in late December - Jan. and yield the same meat weight. I've weighed 55 deer out of 290 this year so far and the average take on meat is 40-45 % of live dressed weight.

njscouts can't seem to PM you because you haven't posted here yet. But yeah, that's the guy.

On the bright side there have been like 4 other guys that have PM'ed me and said he got their deer back in 2-3 days without a problem.

Don't know why he has had yours for 8 days and took a week for mine. In any case it's unfortunate he is unreliable because he seems like a nice guy and he is close.

Can't go wrong with Jimmy out of Country Sportsman!!  If you shoot your deer in the AM you'll have it back the next day!  I just wish he vacume sealed his cuts, but it's no problem doing it myself anyway.  He is a stand up guy

Motega I don't understand the DRAMA in your post. These web site is to help each other as hunters and sportsmen. To educate each other and pass our experiences to those that are still learning. We also communicate the good and the bad, so the good experiences will help us and the bad ones will keep us from making the same mistake some of us have made.

You start a thread about a bad butcher. Which we have a few of them in the state. But we never play the drama game and leave must off of in the dark, hoping that we don't end using, from what you have stated a lousy business person. But on the same side of the coin you are praising another butcher that you already knew about.

It gives me the filling that this is nothing more then and advertisement for Jimmy at Country Sportsman. We all ready know how good Jimmy is. Jimmy is the real deal and needs no more praising.

What you need to do is post the name of the butcher that did you wrong, and from what you have already state, the same to other hunters.

gimme a break, I have nothing to gain by telling everyone about Jim, it;s just that I feel bad not using him AND he offered to butcher my deer that very minute if I picked it up from el-Stinko and brought it there so I felt doubly bad.

I already explained why I am taking the high road and not publically sharing this info, and also offered to privately verify whether or not your guy is the one I had the problem with.

I suggest you take the time to reread my posts and if you are still unclear let's take this to a private conversation. I don't talk about people behind their backs just because I think I am right.
