I it was me that bear would have been toast. Sorry, but I wouldnt allow myself to be torn to shreds by a charging bear because some a$$hole governor says it's not politically correct do defend myself against it. F- that.  In alot of other states , citizens are allowed to open carry for that reason. Why do you think ruger sells the Alaskan wilderness revolver[ Hint: it's not for shooting cans]. !

Let me ask you guys a question since most of you are much older and knowledgable ....let say i turn 21 i buy a side arm for protection and lets say i hunt in stokes or jefferson orany of these dense wood wma.  I had this situation happen to me where i was bowhunting alone  and i was charged by two coyotes (or 1 bear) and luckily i got away unharmed . since that situation happened . i start hunting with a side arm after thatsituation due to the fact that i have no one to hunt with a for protection what would happen if a game warden or police officer would stop me in the woods.

im just asking bc i kno someone who use to hunt with their 9mm at their side always after being attcks by a pack of wild dogs up in the watershed i think it was ,but this was sometime ago.

It is illegal to hunt with a handgun in NJ. It is illegal to carry or be in possession of a loaded handgun in NJ without a NJ concealed carry license , which you have a better chance of hitting the lotto before getting approved for one of those permits in NJ. I believe [but not certain] you may be able carry on your own private property in NJ , but still cant use the firearm[handgun outside the home] so it is pointless to even try.

you have a serious legal problem if your caught here...and oneshotkill is right, it is hard to get one... the cops told me unless i work in Newark or Patterson on the graveyard shift or own my own business and carry a lot of cash I'm not getting one. They looked at me like I was crazy to even ask for a handgun carry permit for bear protection.

I would get yourself some grizzly bear mace and some extra shells, sabots or arrows if the time ever arises. I even converted from a 2 arrow quiver to a 4 just in case.

no offence but if a bear is charging you like your really going to be able to nock, pull ,aim and fire a arrow at a charging bear come on now ....people in california would smell the pile of shit in my shorts if a bear charged me deadon

i would hate to have to start monday morning quater backing your buddy but....it is more of a reason to lose your job for fireing your off duty weapon into the air since the ag guidlines clearly states you can not fire warning shots...and second more why did he not shoot the bear the bear is obviously a very agressive bear and in my book that bear could cause death or serious bodily injury....it would have been a dead bear if that was me.. they would have been pulling 45acp out of his head...and i am sure my chief and any other leo's would feel the same.. and if you state" but it was just a reaction.. when a bear is running at you...." he shouldnt carry a gun because it means in plain cop talk he shits the bed when shit hits the fan......

hey 4 is better than two, ill fire two if i can and pull one out and stab him with it if i have too. I don't know about you but i cant nock and instinctively shoot arrows in seconds. And up here we walk around with an arrow already nocked so that cuts down on the time it takes.

Dont get me wrong i have already been at the point of shiting my shorts with some of the bears that have walked by me. Today I saw easy a 600 pounder and I was trembling as it walked by.

I understand your point, my best friend is from Sullivan county ny, he shot a 400lb bear 5 times with a t/c .54 cal renegade before he brought it down, so i guess its really the first shot that counts or are bears really just that tough?

I would imagine that unless he was extremely lucky...with a standard police issue automatic pistol he would not have killed the bear...and probably would have wounded it and created a public safety hazard. First...very few people have the skill to put bullets in the kill zone on a charging animal particularly with an automatic handgun...a handgun with very little knowckdown power.  Google some of the past articles of police trying to shoot bears in NJ and NY with standard issue weapons.  About two years back police responded to a bear home entrance in Kinnelon...and I believe shot the bear 22 times with a handgun...before one of the officers went back to the car to get their shotgun.

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried to my grave by 6.
