I used to hunt there. I found better spots my buddy still hunts off Atzion rd he said this has been his worst year ever. He has only seen 4 or 5 does all of bow season.

no deer in 19 i have gotten 7 so far and have a heard of over 50 in the area i hunt just shot 3 does thursday that were around 100 each
Posted:  17 Dec 2007 12:20 AM
but i am hunting private land that has not been hunted in years and no sign of ehd by me
Posted:  17 Dec 2007 12:29 AM
well there has been talk by guys who have spoken to rangers and wardens  - ehd, coyote, and of course the permit shot gun thing.

But officially i haven't heard from rangers of wardens, just word of mouth from other hunters.

and you know how the telephone game goes.

some guys near me did fine.  I hunted back in 03 then stopped for a couple of years.  hunted this year and yes i have not seen the same number of deer i have in the past.

i know that ehd is in the area i know 2 different people across town that have found does and buck dead so but this property i am on i was told  by the owner that its out of control eating all there plants and the fence thats 6 feet high wasn't enough to keep them out of his garden  he had to put wire up as high as 10 feet just to make sure they stayed out and now i am just takening the deer that come up to the house . then in the back of the property i am trying to only take mature deer like big does and big bucks

I have seen no sign of EHD or CWD in my areas on the outskirts of Medford in Wharton. I think it's really tough to guage how much the deer population suffered from any of the 3 (EHD, yotes, and shotgun drives). I personally see much fewer does, but that could be any number of things. In fact, my trail cams showed twice as many bucks as does. That was great during early season, but by late October those bucks left in search of does. I think continued developement on the edge of Wharton has given the deer safety, bedding, and food. My buddy only hunts a few miles from me, but has that exact scenario being on private property that connects to Wharton. He has his pick of shooter bucks from mid-season on. In some of his trail cam pics, there are so many deer you can't even count how many are there! I think the other issue during late fall through winter is the number of guys in the woods. In my limited experience, these mature bucks and does won't tolerate any type of pressure and careless scouting, poaching, etc.... I had this happen to me this year and it really hurt deer movement at my go to spot. I think deer movement in this area changes from year to year, and unless you have proven spots that are monitored via trail cams, it's hard to say if in fact things have really changed for the worse. More likely the deer have just found another area to avoid the never ending pressure that exists on public land in our zone.

Hi everyone! This is my first post but I do read this site alot. I think everyone's ideas about the lack of deer in the pines are good, but my opinion is the cause of the lack of deer, particularly this year, is the lack of acorns. This is the third year in a row that the gypsy moths destroyed the pine barrens and I don't think the does are reproducing due to a lack of proper protein.

The gypsy moths seem to be everywhere.  Every piece of woods I was in this year so far had gypsy moth egg casings on the trees.  The oak galls on the black and scarlet oaks are also a problem.  Oak galls combined with gypsy moths are a death sentence to the tree.

No deer left in 19.  No bucks left in south jersey, you should head north.

I hunt zone 14, 15 this time of year but come opening day in zone 23 I will be there ( Atco Area) I currently have a trail cam on my stand site and I am seeing a lot of deer about 30 a week and about 10 diffent bucks 1/2 of them I would shoot. EDH estimates are around 450 in the area. Over the last few weeks there have been more deer showing up. I get more buck on film around mid october. I have had a trail cam there for about 4 years but activity always seems to pick up on the cam around mid october.
I set my bait pile and cam up there Aug 1st every year so I do have an idea of there pattern there. These deer live in the swamps and early season they are held up there pre rut they start coming out

a little off topic but if yotes are the problem I'd like to hunt some this year; anyone know of a good property?
Posted:  23 Sep 2008 7:28 AM
Try Atco off Jackson Road behind Atco Race track. I hunt private land there but I have taken many deer from behind the race track.
As far as yotes I only have gotten 1 on film in 5 years my brother lives back in the pines and sees them about 1 x a month

yotes are everywhere in the pines   anywhere is a good place to hunt them lol
