Marmots are members of the genus Marmota, in the rodent family Sciuridae (squirrels). Marmots are generally large ground squirrels. Those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas such as the Sierra Nevadas in the United States or the European Alps. The groundhog aka Woodchuck is properly called a marmot.

It seems to be the body size of a good sized house cat but reminds me of a skinny - young raccoon with no stripes on its tail. Fisher seems like a default "go to" here and the tail seems about right for a fisher along with the hunched back. Would a fisher eat corn? That animals ears are laid back like it is chewing but who can be sure. Compared to the log and the young coyote that is too much mammal for a mink or weasel. RGS has skinned everything alive so it is hard to doubt his idea that it is a squirrel. However, the tail - plus the curved length of the spine - the overall size of the head and the shape of those ears.....combined with the fur texture.... really has me thinking young fisher.

Quote: I've deleted thousands of squirrel pictures from this location, there's no way in HELL this thing's a squirrelRGS has skinned everything alive so it is hard to doubt his idea that it is a squirrel groundhog-maybe, but the ears are wrong. raccoon without stripes on it's tail- possible. I've seen mink in the area, but it's too big to be a mink.
