ok, decided to go out this afternoon in warren.
got into the stand at about 2:50. snowing. perfect. 3:15 had a doe come in with a basket 6 on her tail. he only stopped once at about 30 yards to rub a tree. 4:00, look behind me, and a 2 1/2 year old 8 pointer has snuck up behind me. he is about 6 feet from the base of my tree. since i am by route 78, the noise of traffic covers any noise of me standing and grabbing my bow. before the season, i promised i would hold out for a minimum of a 2 1/2 year old 8 point or better. here was my opportunity. he walks away from me and turns into my shooting lane. i let out a little "meh" and he stops, 15 yards, quartering away, looking at the 6 and the doe i mentioned before. i am at full draw, my fiber optics glowing against the wet hair behind his front shoulder. one second, two seconds, three seconds go by. why hasn't my spitfire-tipped arrow blown through this buck yet? "eh, only about a 15" spread. right g-1 is only about 1.5", g-2's are only about 7" a piece. g-3's are only about 3 inches. he'd be nicer next year. a shooter for sure" i can hear myself in my head. he walks out of my shooting lane. i have officially raised my bar on what a "shooter" deer is. me, a 21 year old kid with only one buck under his belt with the bow, limited time to hunt, and refuses to refer to himself as a trophy hunter. i never intended to become a trophy rack hunter. but that doe would of tasted just as good, and i let her walk. i don't want to become a hypocrite. besides, he'd make my little brother happier lying on the ground anyway. ![]() __________________ Outdoorsmen: the original conservationists.

If all us hunters would do the same thing...We wouldn't have to spend money to go to Illinios,Iowa Kansas,or Saskachewan.
Hope he makes it ! __________________ <- <- <- <- ~ <- <- <- <-

| You did not know he wasn't a shooter until you drew back? Never focus on the antlers when drawing back because it will cost you one day on a big boy when you miss. | ||

while walking under me, he was shielded from hickory trees.
(fun fact: hickory trees keep their leaves on a long time after most other trees are bare. same is true with swamp white oak) i knew he was a 2 1/2 year old 8 pointer based upon body size and i could see his one side, when he stepped out into the unobstructed open, i was already at full draw. but i became critical. thanks for the heads up tho. __________________ Outdoorsmen: the original conservationists.
