got a text from my father this morning. he kicked up a big, chocolate racked 8 pointer in the 20 acre area i was heading out to this afternoon. so i was pumped.

drove like crazy home from Rutgers. (sorry if i cut you off on River Rd., 287 north, 22 west, or 202 south). showered, shot two arrows in the backyard to make sure i was on, and drove up to warren.

got into the stand at 2:30. a little late, but not bad.

at about 4:30, had a big mature doe come in and right behind her, a big chocolate racked 8 pointer following behind her. Finally, after passing up all of those 1 1/2 and small 2 1/2 year olds, i was gonna get a crack at something that would make me happy.

i size him up really quick: browtines, 4 inches, G-2's 11 inches, G-3's 7-8 inches. spread, 20 inches. mass, atleast 4-5 inches in diameter at the bases.  extremely symmetrical.

40 yards, 35 yards, 30 yards, 25 yards, 20 yards, about to step into my shooting lane. i draw while his head is behind a tree. the arrow makes the slightest sound as it pulls through the whisker buscuit. he stops, looks in my direction. all i can see are his ears and rack on either side of the tree.  i try to look for a clear shooting lane. none. he bounds 25 yards and looks around and continues to eat and follow the general direction of the doe. i range him at 43 yards, a bit outside my 25 yard rule.

close, but no cigar.

he continues to eat and hang out about 50 yards away for an hour.  as he leaves, i grunt and try the can, only getting him to turn broadside once at 70 yards.

later had a 6 and a spike follow the path of the doe. drew on both of them just to see if they could hear the arrow draw across the whisker biscuit. nope, they just walked by unknowingly.

they dont get that big by being stupid.

i cant hunt that property again til monday.

you must be hunting near zone 12? I hunt zone 12 myself and also go to rutgers, graduating this year and cant wait, no more of those "crazy drives" home down easton, 287, 22 and 202.  The impatience to get up on the stand kills me even though its only about a 25 minute drive as long as its not rush hour.

KoBear I feel your pain. Great afternoon hunt in Reading Township this afternoon, had a nice 2 1/2 year 8 pt, outside his ears, pretty high, have seen him just about every time I go out, but I'm hunting fields, and its hard getting them close. Grunt him in from 100 yds, get him @30 yds but just didn't feel comfortable w/ the distance, and angle he gave me. Would be sick to my stomach if I wounded him. Hopefully he will elude us all this year and grow to 3 1/2 and be in the class of yours. Good Luck with him.

Wow I can relate to that Im going to Kean and been taking those crazy drives four days a week down 78 and up 206. Hey no tickets yet. Do you think "going deer hunting" would get you out of a ticket?

Had that happen about three years ago on a really nice ten...switched to a dropaway that has a sh%tload of mole skin on it.

I know your pain...said that to myself twice this season on 2 different P&Y eights at less than 20 yards

It's what keeps us going back for more! Gotta love this sport!
