I blew it this morning on a nice 6 pointer, it came in walking straight at me and i drew back on it never turned broad side, it kept comeing right at me so at about 6 yards it stopped and i went for a spine shot( or a vital shot almost straight down) the deer jumped straight up and turned ran about 10 feet just looking around i started to knock another arrow by the time i got one knocked it never presented another shot. i got down checked the arrow45 min. later there was some white hair but the arrow was dry, no blood on the ground so i walked up the run to the last place i saw him with no sign of blood so i just packed it in early and went home disapointed. But it was better than leaving a wounded annimal in the woods. Dad and I are heading out in a bit to give it another shot this afternoon. maybe i will have a better shot

Sounds like a paunch shot. The arrow will come out looking dry, esp after 45 minutes. but a sniff and a lick on the fingers will detect a stickyness. The white hair is from the exit on the belly. It's laying down dead somewhere. Sorry about the news ,but it happens to all of us.I shot a doe once with a slug , I knew I hit it by her reactions, she just kept walking up and over the mountain. I couldn't get another shot off because my gun jambed. I couldn't find any hair or blood but I knew it was hit. After exploring the other side f the mountain with really no place to look and no one else shooting I just sulked. But not without a good investigation. asgobblergetter said. First, a "spine shot" is not a vital shot or a shot anyone should be taking on purpose. Second, a straight down shot is not a high percentage shot either. No possible way to double lung.
Now think about this. Where is the white hair on a deer? Is there any way to shave white hair off a deer with a shot from directly above? Without going through it? Hmmmmm..... __________________ "To be unarmed and therefore helpless in the face of evil is irresponsible and in fact complicit to said evil. Now you know. No need for anyone else to flame you (but they will). Feeling bad about it is the important part - so we learn.

maybe the shot was just really bad and i took some off the tail or inside of thigh? the deer was in my sites for a good 2 min with no signs of being wounded.was within 10 yards of me for first 30 seconds and deer just stood and walked away no visible illness at all? i had harvested deer like this before one dropping the deer right away and the other with very good blood trail and deer being piled up 50 yrds away. I hope what you guys are suggesting is not true. I did go to the last point that i saw the deer with no sign on the ground or bushes at all. I am hoping i did just graze him and run into him soon
