Ok, so you can't tell me that as a bowhunter in NJ you haven't felt as if you had the worst luck in the world at times, right?! You know, like that buck you been dreaming about is at 60 yards and some maniac comes rippin through the woods on his 2 stroke and runs the buck off, or the wind shifts just as the deer start to move and they blow so loud your buddy in the next zone hears them, or you have 2 does feeding at 20 yards and a nice buck is coming and your phone rings and you forgot to turn the ringer off, or you go to draw and your arrow comes unknocked and hits the tree stand and makes the loudest noise you could ever imagine, well you get the idea it always seems to happen to us bowhunters. In fact, my hunting buddies and I often spend a ton of time telling the others why our luck is worse. It gets comical as you can imagine.
Well this Saturday I took the lead in the worst luck contest. I have been battling the flu for over a week now and just can't kick this stupid cough. I get up at 3am. Saturday to take a bunch of meds in the hopes of clearing it up. I get up at 5am, to get showered for my morning sit. I don't even make it to the bathroom and I am already coughing. I scrap it and decide I'll get better for the afternoon. I take double the doses of everything, pack my pockets with cough drops, and I am off for an early sit at 2pm. I get in and all seems good. Cough is at bay, although I have several moments where I am gritting my teeth not to cough. I do some calling, I do some rattling. Around 4pm. and the woods erupts. I have heard this sound before in the same direction and know it's the two monsters I have seen fighting before. I do a quick double check to make sure I am ready, bow in hand and grunt tube standing by. It gets closer and I know they are coming to me. I am on the edge of my seat, finally I am gonna get a shot. Before I can have another thought I hear voices and then see 3 guys walking toward me They get closer and I begin to whistle in an attempt to get their attention before they completely blow my hunt. No luck they keep walking. Finally, they come into my shooting lane and the one retard whistles to his buddy to stop and they are all standing in the trail crossing looking at me. I freaked out and asked them what the heck they were doing at 4pm. on a Saturday during hunting season during the rut. They had nothing to say for themselves so I suggested they turn around and head back where they came from. Keep in mind, I am set up within 50 yards of the bedding so our conversation was guaranteed to ruin the hunt. Needless to say, I sat the next 2 1/2 hours steaming and of course saw nothing! I had a great early season when everyone was complaining about heat and no movement, but I am paying for it now. Everyone I know has a buck down thanks to the rut being in progress and I haven't even seen a deer in 3 sits! Why you ask, well simply because I have the worst luck! LOL

It happens, and yes it sucks, but thats bowhunting. That what makes everything worth going out there. The chance of maybe outwitting a monster. We are only human and sh!t happens, you just learn form your mistakes and go on.
As for the people walking by, was it on Private or Public land? If it was public, they had every right to be there, needless to say it was very rude and some commen sense may have been lacking. If it was Private land......good luck and get them off there! Good luck and learn from your mistakes, that big one will show again and you'll have your chance. ![]() __________________ "How can you be so hypocritical to look down on a man who is honest enough to kill his own?" | A guy was walking around the woods calling out looking for his lost dog on Saturday on my hunt as well. This was the first time I took my 9-year old daughter on a hunt. So I just got out of the stand and tried another. | ||

Elusive, it was public but tucked in deep where I haven't had any issues with other hunters or people in general. Actually felt like my own slice of heaven for a short time.
All too aware on the other stuff, I was meerely venting and thought those that could relate would smile! |

Public v Private is irrelevant. I have 750 acres of private land, and have ATV's mountain bikes, and hikers all the time-oops we didn't see the posted sign
I have days on the private land during bow that I was faced with more interuption that I had on public land on the 6-day opener
But all that chatter can work to your advantage-my first deer this year I took because 2 guys on mountain bikes came down a trail to my left, and the doe group cut through the thick stuff right past my stand to avoid them-I tagged her at 4:00 p.m. and was home long before sundown. How surprised were those two guys when a doe with an arrown sticking out of her just about ran them over

Quote: Sorry, It's not mine to allow others on. 4 of us hunt the property at the request of the farmer in exchange for depridation work throughout the year. Some times it's not worth it-escpecially when you pull the trigger on a huge buck in augustAre you looking for some new friends But that's the price we pay to maintain access. If we don't kill the deer while they are in the fields-He'll find someone else to do it-way to many deer around that property to even think about giving it up
The guy that runs the show has been on the land with that same farmer for nearly 20 years. I'm not going to rock the boat-I'll just accept what the Good Lord has provided and be thankful ![]() __________________ Support the N.J.O.A. and the "Littel Amendment" An amendment to the New Jersey State Constitution that Guarantees the right to hunt, trap, and fish in New JerseyNew Jersey Outdoor Alliance
