I don't know about the youth model, but I have the H&R in a 12ga and it is deadly. My cousins have the 20ga and it is even better. You shouldn't be disappointed.

For less recoil the Lightfields are very nice. I have the 20 gauge adult model and shoot the lightfields. Goood gruops at 100 yuards and very easy on the shoulder.

I was weaned on the 20 Gauge H&R single. Lots of fond memories. Should shoot pretty straight with the slugs up to 50 yds.

If you can take him small gaming that is the best training for that gun. Teaching him how to shoot and reload, etc.

Best of luck. I'll never forget the day I turned 10 and got that gun!
