It wont be easy filling my tag this year, scouted my NY spot just over the state line and it was then did some spot lighting of the fields around my zone 2 area, very very few deer, like 4 when I usually see 20-30

My spot in Zone 2 was so lifeless this year I have not even concidered hunting it. I checked for scrapes and rubs a week ago and found nothing. I did find some deer droppings but not enough to make me want to hunt there this year. I know last season Zone 2 had a lot more Shotgun hunters than in previous years. But that shouldn't make a difference. Also we need to keep in mind the Gypsy Moths decimated the oaks in zone 2 last year and this year.

Guess it's the area you hunt, I've been hunting in Zone 2, Vernon area and see deer everyday out. Finally found the bedding spot on the piece I'm hunting and yesterday saw 5 bucks cruising through. Unfortunately no shots, but great to see.
I also know of about 3-4 accessible fields from the roads on the wildlife management area's that I can go watch deer any evening with the kids, guaranteed. There may not ba as many as other zones, can't tell never hunted there, but am seeing deer for sure.

Hunt Zone 2 near the Sussex Airport.  Deer numbers have been down as well as quality bucks due to extended shotgun plus development.  We took 1 small 4pt off the lease so far but nothing much has been seen.  Headed up next week in the afternoons.

Very strang in 2. we hunt Lafayette on private land. All season we have been seeing deer in good numbers and a ton of small bucks, more then I have ever seen before. Except my buddy hunted every day last week and saw almost nothing. Went out last night and for the first time this season I didnt see anything at all. It's very strange. I kind of thought it was the wind but he said it was like that all week. Lots of coyotes this year though. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

My cousin still lives in Vernon, he knows a local cop who works nights, drives all over the township and spots the fields, he says the deer population is way down and has only seen one really good buck.

Times have changed, unlimited antlerless has hurt.

I hunt zone 2 in Hardyston ,and I have seen more bucks than does this year. Last Saturday alone I saw 9 bucks. 7 probally mature, the other 2 young about a year and 1/2. and 2 does before sun down. I have 2 trail cam's out most are showing triple the amount of bucks to does in the pictures.

are there rubs and scrapes to go along with those buck sightings???

Zone 2 does seem like it has less deer. I Went yesterday and had abut 10 does in the field .... No buck all day and after the morning hunt i went for a walk i couldn't find one scrape or rub.... Last year they were all over

Yea, they are there but I'll be damed if we can find them. We have seen active scrapes but were not timing them right. They must have gone nocturnal. My buddy lives there and he went out last night and only saw one button buck in a spot that was good for 10+ deer passing thru in an evening on any given day. We'll see how the wind is tomorrow maybe we can get out in the afternoon. It's been a tough season, I passed on a nice 6 in the normal season and that was the last shooter buck i have seen since. Earlier we saw a ton of small bucks though but it seems they have disapeared as well as the does. Ahhhh Who knows!

Good Luck Frapps

thanks, as bad as the scouting looked this past fall we were able to find a few deer, there are spots where there always seem to be deer, strange thing was there was very little sign, hardly any rubs, few scrapes.

All I can say is that it was the worst season in our part of Zone 2 since 1994 (when I started hunting the area). Our lease actaully had some solid buck sign and I even saw a solid 8 during bow but something changed during the blackpowder/shotgun seasons. Maybe it was the weather or lack of surrounding pressure but our club had the worst year for both bucks and does. There has been a lot of development in our area from good ole Toll Brothers and others plus it seems a lot less guys are hunting during the gun seasons. Not to mention the late shotgun seasons and doe a day policies.

Maybe next year will be awesome but I dont like the way things have been going.
