NJH Interview with: (Screen Name): Bacs
Real Name: Brian Dolobacs Age: 38 Years Hunting: 28 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow Marriage Statues: Divorced. Kids: How many: 0 Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Private, same land for 28 years What do you Hunt, Water Fowl, Small Game, Big Game: Big Game Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Mostly from a tree. Do you Bait, Yes or NO: Yes Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Both, when I can. How Did you get Started Hunting: My Father, started walking corn fields with him hunting pheasant long before I was of age to hunt. These are some of my fondest memories. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) How about best fishing story instead???? About 10 years ago some friends and I chartered a boat and we were out sharking on the Monster Ledge. The mate looked just like Kato Kalin...and we started calling him Kato (he still goes by Kato to this day) We weren't there 20 minutes and we had a pup Mako to the boat & released. We got into some big blues (12 - 15lbs), but on hevy tackle it isn't all that fun. So the Captain breaks out a smaller spinning rod with a diamond jig. Fun fighting a big blue with this set up! Well, one of the guys gets into a real nice one and it starts heading for the front of the boat (31' Bertram). Kato says "Give me the rod, I'll walk him around"; well kato takes the rod, hops up on the side of the boat and goes to grab a hand rail that was never there...ker-plunk! Right into the water he goes.... Kato's eyes are big as hell, he's in the chum slick, he's got the rod up, and the bluefish is trying to pull him under the boat! First words outa the Captains mouth!?! "Don't lose the rod"...LOLOLOLOL The Captain pulls the rod up and we pull Kato in. I really wish I had a video camera...that would have easily won the $10,000 prize on America's Funniest Home Videos! Your Dream Hunt: Big Whitetails in Illinois, or fat hogs in Tennessee. Do you Fish: Sometimes, it just doesn’t appeal to me the way that it used to. Well, that's changed alot now; I fish every chance I get Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Saltwater, surf and boat. I spent most of my childhood and adolescent summers growing up on Island Beach State Park. I’ve probably caught more fish in my lifetime than most people will ever see. What kind of Rod, Fly Rod, Surf Rod, Boat Rod: See above Live Bait or Artificial: Whatever’s working the best at the time. A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: United Bowhunters of NJ(Disgruntaled Fomer Counsel Member), Traditional Archers of NJ, North American Bowhunter’s Coalition, NAHC, USSA, Pope & Young, Boone & Crockett, Bowhunters Rights Coalition, and the NJSFSC(Disgrunatled again) Favorite Hunting Season: Bow, was there really ever any doubt?!? __________________ Quote: Hunting is My Heart & Soul, Without it. NJH Interview with: JerseyJim
Real Name: Jim Sammon Age: 37 Nov. 4, 1968 Years Hunting: 25 Favorite Hunting Weapon: 12ga. Shotgun Marriage Statues: married Kids: How many: Yes/6 3girls and 3boys Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: both, mostly public What do you Hunt, Water Fowl, Small Game, Big Game: Small game and deer. Hopefully bear. Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Both Do you Bait, Yes or NO: No Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: All day How Did you get Started Hunting: Family tradition. My father taught me to hunt. His father taught him and so on. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) A couple years back, I was hunting the second day of the 6day. I had shot a nice 7 point opening day and was looking for a real nice 6 point I had seen scouting earlier in the year. Around 11am I heard something slapping against some trees. It was another hunter driving deer in the property behind ours. Sure enough here comes my six point running with 5 or 6 does. You could see his High wide rack from a long way off! As he crossed a stone wall 25 yards from me he stopped for a second to look back at the other hunter giving me a shot. Boom! He rolled off the wall but got back up and ran across the property and into a County Park. I gave him about 30 minutes then went to look for him. I couldn’t bring the gun in the park so I went in knife in hand. I followed the blood to the opposite side of the park. That’s where he jumped up out of a thicket and ran into the next piece of property and I heard Boom! My heart sank! I wanted that deer so bad! I spent the rest of the week hunting with that bad taste in my mouth and I didn’t see any other bucks. On the last day of the six day(Saturday) They were calling for some really bad weather in the late morning and afternoon and my father ended up having to go to work so I thought about not going. After thinking about it and being a true hunter I decided to go anyway. I stood in my stand until noon without seeing any deer. The whole time thinking about my missed six point! It was raining and the temps were dropping so I decided to walk a little. I ended up at my fathers tree stand at the other end of the property (closer to the car). I decided to give his stand a try and if the weather took a turn for the worse at least I was closer to the car. I was in his stand for about 20 minutes when the rain started to turn to freezing rain and snow. I couldn’t hear a thing with the weather and it was starting to get dangerous so I decided to leave. As I turned to lower my gun deer jumped everywhere! They had walked up behind me without me ever hearing them! 15 or so, they were everywhere!! Then as they were running away 5 or 6 more came running full speed down the hill in front of me (all does) and 3 more busted out of the thicket behind me! All running in the same direction! The weather changed to all snow now and was really coming down and everything was icing up but I knew they were driving the property next to ours and decided to wait it out! It was around 3:30 and with the weather it was getting dark fast! Just then I hear more deer coming down the hill. I see movement and a doe bolting straight at me. Right behind her more movement. This time I see antlers. NICE antlers. The buck gets within 10 yards and BOOM! He spins but doesn’t drop! BOOM! He drops but hops back up and starts running straight away from me! BOOM! The chase is over! He drops and stays down this time. He was an 8 point with a 17inch spread! Not my biggest buck but a great looking set of antlers and a great replacement for the spot I had picked out on the wall for that tall six! Everything worked against me going that day! I was bummed about losing that six, I had seen very little deer activity that whole week, My dad had gotten called into work and everything pointed to me leaving early that day because of the weather! If I had given in to any of those excuses I would have missed my favorite hunt of all! It was my favorite because I had every excuse not to be out there but I stuck it out and in a 15 minute span with about an hour and a half of the season left I saw 25-30 deer (more then the rest of the season put together) and I got a nice buck as a reward! I replay that 15 minutes over and over in my head all the time! Your Dream Hunt: A whitetail hunt somewhere in the big woods of Canada! Do you Fish: Yes Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Both What kind of Rod, Fly Rod, Surf Rod, Boat Rod: Many different kinds, shapes and sizes. Live Bait or Artificial: Both A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: ( North American Hunting club, North American Fishing Club, Ducks Unlimited, ect: ) NewJerseyHunter.com, NRA, USSA, NJSFSC, Buckmasters, North American Hunter, Bassmasters Favorite Hunting Season: Rabbit/Firearm deer __________________ ............................................

Real Name: Sean Gill Age: 32 Years Hunting: 22 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow Marriage Statues: Married Kids: How many: 3 one on the way Due March 21st 2006 Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Private What do you Hunt, Water Fowl, Small Game, Big Game: Small game and Big Game (Deer, Bear, Pheasant, Rabbit, Turkey) Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Both Do you Bait, Yes or NO: Yes Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Both Prefer Afternoons How Did you get Started Hunting: My Father Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) When I was 10 I just got my hunting license and me and my father were hunting private land in Randolph. I was walking in a valley by myself and my father was walking the field and we were hunting rabbits, When a herd of Deer about 20-30 of them were running down the hill towards me I mean directly towards me like the did not even see me. So being ten and now very scared for my life I took a shot into the air and that is when one of the deer fell and tumbled right in front of me and did not get up it died right there and then. My father came over and asked what happened and I told him and he did not believe me. So we brought the deer home and he skinned it and found no shot in it cause I did not shoot it. So he thought maybe I shot it in the head so he skinned the head out and to his amazement he found no shot in the head either he was dumb founded. So to this day we have no explanation as to how the deer died we have an idea that maybe it either had a heart attack or when it fell it broke it’s neck. . Very Strange but very true also! It was bleating her head off as if wanting me to follow. I knew something was up. I leaned against a 4"sapling for about 5-10 min. when her youngun "Thought" it was safe to make it's way to freedom. Put it down with one shot at about forty yards. or could have been when a Drive came through and they harvested their deer, one they wounded and gave up on. I asked if they'd mind if I tried they said go for it. I circled a thicket and found no tracks coming out. So I started tracking it staying about 5 yds to the left of the trail. Stuff so thick you could only see 20 yds. The trail started to make a circle so I figured it was trying to back track. Then I spied an eye through the bushes. It took off , I fired and that was that. Best part was it ended up only a few hundred yds from my truck. Unfortunetly, my grandfather has passed, and I only get to hunt rifle season in Pa with my father, so I enjoy any company when I go hunting Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) This is easy, my second buck ever, It was the first day of rifle season in PA and I was 14 I think. Anyway I was hunting right next to my father, and at first light a spike came walking about 50 yards away, I told my father and he coached me thru taking my time and everything else. So I scoped the buck, pulled the trigger and missed. I was sooo bumed out about it. About 2 hours later my father must have dozed off, cause this buck caming running up the hill and stopped about 30 yards away, I had no time to tell my father so I put the crosshairs on him and BANG he was hit. It scared the hell out of my dad, and so we went to go look for it, when we came upon it, my father couldn't believe his eyes, It was a monster 9 pointer! NJH Interview with: (Screen Name) Matty
Real Name: Matthew D. Age: 27 Years Hunting: 17 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow, it’s the best as far as I’m concerned! Marriage Status: Single Kids: How many: 10 or 12 Ive lost count and they havent proved that three of them ar mine….…..Just kidding….No kids yet. Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Public What do you Hunt, Water Fowl, Small Game, Big Game: I mainly hunt Deer and Turkey, but I also enjoy hunting for bear, coyote, woodchuck, and someday I hope to hunt Elk and Moose, with a bow of course! Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Both, they can both be effective under the right circumstances. Do you Bait, Yes or NO: No Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Midday during the rut is my favorite. Afternoons used to be my favorite, but since Im hunting with a few new friends this year that can only hunt mornings, mornings have become more enjoyable. How Did you get Started Hunting: My uncle got me started with my first bow, first camo coverall and first set of aluminum arrows tipped with broadheads. He taught me a lot of what I know about hunting today, and Im ever-grateful towards him for that. It’s a part of me now that can never be taken away. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) My stories stink, plus it takes too long to tell them properly. I’ll just put it like this. Every time I go out and sit in the woods, Im having the best time of my life. Deer sightings, kills, they mean very little to me. Its all about enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer! Your Dream Hunt: I guess I would be standing in some aspen trees panting for my breath in the thin mountain air. The bugle of an Elk would crack the silence and still of the cold that encases the woods around me. A chill would run down my spine as the sound of an 800 pound animal worked his massive rack through the brush right towards my position. I ready myself in wait for the perfect shot. The arrow would fly true, and I would bring an end to one of the most magnificent creatures that God has gifted us with! I would kneel beside the beautiful elk and caress its hide. In a moment of silence I would give thanks to the Lord for allowing me to experience such a moment. Then I would cry as I paid the outfitter the rest of my life savings!
Do you Fish: Yes and I am actually getting better at it. I still don’t compare to my two younger brothers though. They catch fish like they could walk on water! Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Fresh water….never been a big fan of the ocean. I don’t know why. What kind of Rod, Fly Rod, Surf Rod, Boat Rod: Ummm, I don’t have much knowledge of this stuff, but I know they call it a spinning rod. It has fishing line on it though!
Seriously all I know is that I use a 6’ light pole with spinning reel and 4-6# test, and I use that for bass, trout and pickerel. Lures and bait vary of course!
Live Bait or Artificial: Mostly artificial. Powerbait and spinners for trout, rubber worms for bass, etc. A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: ( North American Hunting club, North American Fishing Club, Ducks Unlimited, etc: ) NAHC, UBNJ, and WOHC (that’s the White Oak Hunting Club, my uncle started that a while back when a bunch of us used to hunt together) Geez I long for the old days. Favorite Hunting Season: Bow hunting for deer of course. Havent been able to find a rush quite like it.J __________________ Member UBNJ

After finding out that you can shoot a deer within 1 ½ hours of being in the woods versus me fishing for 12 – 14 hours in the freezing cold to put together a decent catch of fish, I decided to take up hunting. I started with Snow Geese/Canadian Geese down in Brigantine outside of the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge and pheasant at Assunpink WMA, then graduated to deer hunting on the farm that I am still hunting since 1987. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth): There’s always some kind of great story after almost EVERY hunt – There’s too many stories to list here, but if I have the time and you have an open ear, we can sit down for a few hours/days/weeks/months/years to swap stories!!! J Your Dream Hunt: Elk hunting on my cousin’s ranch in Wyoming. I’ve been invited every year since I started hunting, but still haven’t had the time to make the trip – Maybe I’ll get there for the 2006 or 2007 Seasons. __________________ Member UBNJ

Always spend as much time fishing and hunting Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) I hit a buck one morning bow hunting but had to be home for my 6 year old daughter, because my wife had plans. So I went home picked up my daughter and headed back to the woods to trail the deer. She was a great help looking for blood. We jumped the deer in a small river and had another shot while he was swimming across the river, but when I went home to get my daughter I forgot my release in my hunting jacket so I missed him by about 3 feet shooting with my fingers. We had to get in my car, drive to the other side of the river and trail again. (I went home to get my release) I knew he was laying down again, so we walked through a field, she was about 10 yards away looking to scare him, or find him. She yells, there he is, and he heads for the river again. We both ran after him, and I get another shot at him as he gets out of the water on the other side. I wasn't sure if she wanted to see me shoot him, but she just said "don't miss him again Dad" I made a perfect shot and he died in the river. Now the current started taking him away and I had to go into the river for him. She helped me get it out of the river, Helped me gut it, and helped me butcher it. It wasn't one of te bigger bucks I shot but it was a morning I will never forget. NJH Interview with: (Screen Name) luv2hunt
Real Name: Andy Zurawski Age: 31 Years Hunting: 17 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow Marriage Statues: Married Kids: How many: 2 boys (3 years and 4 months old) Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Private What do you Hunt, Water Fowl, Small Game, Big Game: Big Game (deer), I used to hunt pheasant on the WMA’s but I had to many bad experiences and I haven’t done so in about 5 years. I have gone to a few semi wild preserves for pheasant, chukar and quail, and had a great time, especially when you have a bird dog working in front of you, can’t beat it. Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: When hunting with a bow, I’m always in a tree. When hunting with a gun, it all depends on the area I’m hunting. What I mean by this is that if it’s a hilly area with valleys I’ll find an area overlooking a valley and hunt off the ground. If it’s a relatively flat area, I like to get up in a tree. Do you Bait, Yes or NO: Sometimes. Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: I’ll hunt anytime I have an opportunity to get out. Especially now with two young children in the house, it’s tough to get away sometimes. They demand a lot of time and attention, which is fine by me. I just hope that they are into the outdoors as much as I am. So far it looks good. Every time I try to get ready for a hunt or a fishing trip, all I hear from him is “Can I go with you”? Over and over and over. How Did you get Started Hunting: My dad hunted and fished while I was growing up, and need I say more. He took me fishing whenever he could, and he would take me places where he knew I could catch fish. As for the hunting, he got me started by just going out and shooting air rifles, 22 calibers, and then progressed to shotguns, rifles and a bow when I was strong enough to draw one back. When I was old enough I took my safety courses for all of the above, and he started taking me along on deer hunts, and I’ve never stopped since. My dad doesn’t hunt anymore, and I do miss that, but I can never thank him enough for getting me started. I hope I can only do the same for my boys, as God knows I will try. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth) It was the 99-2000 season. My friend and I were in a club and we had property in Bloomsbury, NJ. It was the last week of Fall Bow season, and the deer activity had picked up considerably. My friend went out to hunt the Bloomsbury property on Tuesday morning, I unfortunately had to work and didn’t go. He hunted until around 10 am and called me to tell me that he had seen a total of 5 different bucks that morning, along with several doe. He also said that two of the bucks were exceptional deer. With this news, the gears in my head start turning, thinking about how I could get my butt out there. Later in the day, I pulled my boss aside and said I won’t be in on Thursday, I have something I need to take care of. Yes, this is exactly what I told him, and he said OK, no problem. So Thursday morning comes(two days before permit bow), I’m in my stand a good 45 minutes before it begins to get light out. The weather was cold and crisp and it was very calm. I was situated in a hedge row that was dividing standing corn on one side, and a green field on the other side. The deer were already moving, as I could see their shadows in the green field and I could hear them moving through the corn and then out into the field. At around 7:30, a single deer appeared in the green field on the far opposite side a good 250 yards away, and was headed right at me. It’s now 20 minutes later and he’s still a good 100 yards out steadily feeding in my direction. By now I’ve glassed him and he looks like a good 8 ptr. I’m now standing with bow in hand waiting. He then gets to within about 70 yards of me and begins to turn and walk away to my right. Now I begin to panic thinking great, what should I do now. I decide to pull out my grunt tube and give it two soft grunts. He doesn’t hear them and keeps walking. I try again, only a little louder this time. He stops, pick his head up and looks in my direction. He stares for 30 seconds or so, then turns and continues on again. I grunt two more times, he stops, looks in my direction, turns, and starts walking towards me. Now, my heart is about to punch through my chest, and buck fever is setting in big time. He gets closer, to where I guess it’s about 25 to 30 yards, walking left to right, very slightly quartering towards me. I tell myself OK, calm down, I take a breath and draw my bow(he doesn’t notice me). While he’s slowly walking, I try to settle the pin behind the shoulder, I let out a soft “mmaaaa” with my mouth, he stops, I release, and I see the arrow disappear in the deer. The buck runs off about 60 yards and stops. 15 minutes goes by, and the deer is still standing there!!! I’m now convinced I missed this deer, and I can’t believe it. The deer then starts to walk off away from me, but towards the same hedge row I’m in and disappears. I wait 30 minutes only, because I’m totally disgusted with myself, and I just wanted to go find my arrow and go home. I get down and start to look for my arrow. I can’t find the arrow and I can’t find any blood or hair. WTF? After looking around for a good 30 minutes, I decide to walk towards where I last saw the buck heading. As I get close to the hedgerow, I see nothing, I begin walking along the hedgerow, and about 50 yards down I spot some white in the corn on the other side of the hedgerow. I approach it, and there he is, dead as a door nail, my best buck with a bow still to this day, a 9 pointer! My arrow was lying right next to him, the arrow never passed through completely, he must have pulled the arrow himself. Your Dream Hunt: A bowhunt someday in Iowa, Illinois or Kentucky for monster whitetails. Do you Fish: Absolutely! I fish fresh and saltwater. I spend most of my time fishing for bass, as I own an 18’ Nitro b [no swearing please] boat, but I also enjoy trout fishing in the spring, striper and fluke in the spring and summer, and salmon in the fall. Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Both. What kind of Rod, Fly Rod, Surf Rod, Boat Rod: For b [no swearing please] I have a multitude of rods, with my G-Loomis rods being my favorites. For the salt water I have a few Gold Cup rods and a St. Croix for the stripers with a Shimano Calcutta 700. For the salmon I use an 9-10 wt. flyrod with an Okuma Integrity reel size 8/9. Live Bait or Artificial: Artificial. The only time I use live bait is when I’m fishing with my son trying to get him some action with panfish, or when I’m ice fishing with tip-ups. A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: ( North American Hunting club, North American Fishing Club, Ducks Unlimited, ect: ) UBNJ, NJFS and NRA Favorite Hunting Season: Fall Bow __________________ Member UBNJ
