It already had 1 side broke off and I was searching for the 3 points on the other side that I blew off. I had shot him in the lungs but he was jumping around so I tried to aim at his shoulder and hit him square on top of his head. Noone beilieved me they some times give me crap till this day. NJH Interview with: (Screen Name): Whiskers
Real Name: Skip Deckman Age: 56 Years Hunting: 44 Favorite Hunting Weapon: PSE Bow Marriage Statues: Married 35 years Kids: Yes/No - How many: 2 boys, 2 granddaughters Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Private What do you Hunt: Deer, Bear (Penna) small game, predators, crows. Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Depends Do you Bait, Yes or NO: Depends on if there are baiters around me. Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Both How Did you get Started Hunting: Father taught me small game hunting. Deer I learned from a multitude of mentors. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth)- December 1995 I was hunting a big pasture in Penna. From the top of the pasture (where I sat) to the very bottom is alittle over 1,000 yards, with a country road across the bottom, its about 400 yards across, with wooded hollows on either side. About 8am, I saw a lone deer walk across the road and disapppear into the bottom of the hollow to my right. The lesiurly way it crossed the road, I figured it may be a buck. 2 hours later, I thought the deer was either napping or came out on the blind side of the hollow. Just as the thought came into my head, he stepped out of the hollow into the field at 375 yards I could see the rack, a big beautiful 8 point. He started walking directly across the field. I shouldered my Rem 760 Gamemaster .270, held high at the top of his back up from his shoulder, and squeezed the trigger. The 130 grain Nosler Ballistic tip, dropped him where he stood. As I walked down to him, a farm kid came out of the left hollow, and asked what I shot. I told him a abuck ( he couldn't see the deer from where he sat)he walked down with me I dressed the deer, and he said, Mister can I drag it down to the road? Sure, go ahead. As we hit the road my son was driving past, and stopped, we put the deer in his truck and went to camp. Your Dream Hunt: None Do you Fish: Yes Fresh Water or Deep Sea: both What kind of Rod? Shimano, Penn Live Bait or Artificial: Both A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: NAHC Life Member, Favorite Hunting Season: All of them __________________ ............................................

NJH Interview with: (Screen Name): Northernhunter
Real Name: Don Age: 40 Years Hunting: 21 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Browning 12 ga. Marriage Statues: M Kids: Yes/No - How many: 2 boys Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Used to hunt soley on public land. Hacklebarney during bow and Balck River during shotgun. I hunted public land from 1988 to about 2000 and then switched over to private. I do miss some of my favorite WMAs though. What do you Hunt: Only deer Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Almost only in a tree. Ony time I hunt on the ground are during blustery days when it's blowing in excess of 30MPH or it's 5 degrees or below and I don't want to be up high and freeze to death. Do you Bait, Yes or NO: I bait about 10% of the time and not until January. Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Mainly afternoons as that's when all the action comes about in the areas I hunt. I used to hunt from 5Am to 7PM before I had kids and now I just don't have the time anymore. When I hunt the Great Swamp, I hunt from sun up to sun down and same during buck season...but during bow I usually only hunt from 3PM to dusk or early morning until 9AM. How Did you get Started Hunting: My Dad got me started. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth)- Taking my first buck after about 7 years of hard hunting. I had hunted WMAs and saw some decent bucks, but that was when you needed a doe first. It was tempting to drop the buck with my bow, but rules are rules. I had several encounters like that. Very frustrating. But then one year I was hunting the Great Swamp and shot my 2 does on the first day. The second day I ventured back to my favorite spot in the Swamp and climbed into my stand. The forecast was for heavy snow (back when the hunt would be in December). I was tucked nicely into my stand and it started sleeting at about sunrise. Sleet hitting the crisp leaves on the ground was deafening. Sleet turned to soft snow. I then heard some definite footsteps, then nothing, then footsteps. I spotted a 7 pointer ever so slowly coming my way. I started shaking like crazy! I saw the snow on his back and counted the points. It took him FOREVER to get within range. After a few minutes of him standing behind a tree, he stepped out. BANG! My first ever buck! I was pumped. It's my only mount I have and nothing will ever surpass the feeling I had that snowy morning when I got my first buck! Your Dream Hunt: Hunting in isolation without any other hunters or hikers interupting my hunt. I don't need to pay $ to go out of state or to Canada. Just give me a nice fall afternoon in the woods alone. Nothing beats that! Do you Fish: Yes Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Salt water in Barnegat Bay What kind of Rod? Penn reel, various rods Live Bait or Artificial: killies, squid, spearing, sand eels, jigs for weaks, etc. A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: Nope Favorite Hunting Season: Fall bow season. Why? Because the shotgun season is when everyone and their brothers are in the woods and the woods are barren. Not fun. I like Sept thru November with the dense foliage on the trees helping conceal your position, watching the leaves turn colors, watching deer feed naturally on acorns, transitioning from hot early September hunts to cooler October hunts to frost covered fields in late October. Also, watching geese migrate south is neat against a dark blue fall sky! By far, I enjoy the fall and using my bow. Takes skill, is fun, only those qualified to hunt are in the woods because harvesting a deer with a bow isn't easy for the average Joe so that means less people in the woods and deer move naturally. __________________ ............................................

Real Name: Keith Andreotta Age: 41 Years Hunting: 35 (ish) Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow Marriage Statues: Married Kids: Yes/No - How many: Yup, 2 daughters Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Mostly public but got into a club last year, I hope to still be in this year. What do you Hunt: Deer, Turkey, Pheasant (occassional rabbit and woodcock) Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: For deer, mostly in a tree but will stay on the ground for gun hunting. Do you Bait, Yes or NO: I did last season becuase of the club (although the deer I shot wasn't anywhere near it) Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Both How Did you get Started Hunting: My Uncle Sonny (and my father was there too). Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth)- There are so many of them. My best was the first day that my oldest daughter came hunting with me. Aside from that, the first one that comes to mind is once when my cousin and I were hunting pheasant. It had just snowed the night before and this was before we had dogs. We chased tracks in the snow, through fields and swamps for hours. We finally got the bird. It was great to be so focused on a single bird. Of course my first turkey with my uncle there was also really special. My first deer. omg, there are so many great times and very very few bad ones. Your Dream Hunt: I would love to someday go for caribou Do you Fish: Occassionally Fresh Water or Deep Sea: A little of both What kind of Rod? Mostly a surf rod Live Bait or Artificial: Artificial for fresh water and live bait for salt. A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: UBNJ Member. Favorite Hunting Season: Honestly, all of them. I love bow hunting the best maybe...but by the end of bow I'm looking forward to walking around for pheasant with my dog. After a while of that I'm ready to hope back in a tree with the gun for deer. There is also something very special about turkey hunting in the spring woods. __________________ ............................................

NJH Interview with: (Screen Name): Deadbolt
Real Name: Tom Age: 21 Years Hunting: 9 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow Marriage Statues: Got a Girl... Kids: Yes/No - How many: No Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Private What do you Hunt: Deer/Turkey/Small Game Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Both Do you Bait, Yes or NO: Yes Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Any time I can! How Did you get Started Hunting: My brother got me hooked w/ BB guns and small game in Florida then my father introduced me into big game hunting once I moved to NJ. Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth)- Opening day 6day firearm 06 season I was sitting in my climber 20ft off the ground just settling in for a nice cold morning. Had my smoke pole by my side hoping to get something from a piece of property unhunted all season. Just as sunup comes I hear someone screaming bloody murder!!!! As I'm climbing down the tree (never climbed down that fast felt like a lumber jack w/ spikes lol) my buddy comes from the next field over and we head in. Found a guy stuck under a MASSIVE rock which had rolled on him crushing his leg and he wasn't able to get out. He was already showing signs of classic hypothermia and was in serious pain. My friend and I pry the rock off of the mans leg with someones PVS feeder (see bainting saved this mans leg!!!) and dragged him out. Performed a quick assessment and we got him to out field. Picked him up w/ my truck and brought him to his house b/c he refused to go to the hospital. Never scored that day but that was my best day of hunting...had it not been for us this man would have dies b/c there was no one else for miles that day!!! Or if you want hunting... The day that got me hooked on archery was the day I took my first deer w/ a bow 6pt. My brother and father picked me up from school and said c'mon lets go hunt for a few hours. No scent precations just jumped in the truck and took off. Got to my stand and was freezing my but off just as dark was coming in. Suddenly I hear crunch crunch crunch and see a buck coming right at me. I draw and follow him at 10 yards I grunt he doesn't stop...at 7 yards I yell he doesn't stop...at 3 yards I shoot as he walks straight down behind the shoulder. Caught one lung part of another and sliced the heart in 2 with a cheapo Kmart broadhead and my PSE fitzgerald. He ran 50 yards a slumped over for the count. I was never so happy in my life (at that point) and jumped for joy. Tracked the deer myself, got the crew gutted him myself, and went to check him in...of course where someone yelled at me b/c it was a dinker 6 and his son scored a monster 10pt on his 800 acer corn farm. I said I dont care it was my first buck!!!! Or another The day I guided a youth on his first hunt. Sat all morning and saw nothing...then the horses got loose! We all ran around got them all together and decided to pack it in for lunch to warm up then head back out. Suddenly a deer crosses the field 80 yards out (out of his buckshot reach but right in front of the blind I built earlier in the year) so I grabbed the kid and we stalked that bugga one step at a time! We got within 40 yards and whacked him. Your Dream Hunt: Oh man so hard to say moose or carribu w/ the bow!! Do you Fish: Yes when I'm not hunting or shooting my bow... Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Salt Water What kind of Rod? What ever my ol' man has bought...not to big into fishing. Live Bait or Artificial: Both A Member of any kind of Hunting or Fishing Clubs: North American Hunting Club, UBNJ, TANJ (traditional), NRA.... Real Name: Paul Pataki Age: 38 Years Hunting: 20 Favorite Hunting Weapon: Bow Marriage Statues: Married Kids: Yes/No - How many: none Hunt mostly on Public or Private land: Public What do you Hunt: Deer, Turkey, Waterfowl Smallgame. Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Both Do you Bait, Yes or NO: No Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: All day How Did you get Started Hunting: On my own Your Best Hunting Story: (The Truth)- My first deer. I was hunting near a swamp in South Jersey. I've been hunting for nearly 10 years and still have not got a shot oppertunity on a deer. When this little deer was calling in the brush just out of sight. I gave a call on a grunt tube and out it came! The first deer I ever called!! I was so excited! it came in and went broad side at 20 yards when I promptly rushed the shot and missed by a mile. The deer ran off about 50 yards or so and looked back. I was shaking so hard I nearly dropped my call as I blew on it. The deer then came walking back into bow range!! I couldn't't beleve my luck!! I waited for the deer to get broadside for a shot. When it did I released the arrow only to see it start out high. the deer dropped and spun around into the path or the arrow witch then hit it in the head. entering under the left ear and exiting under the right eye. NJH Interview with: MTH
Real Name: Mark Hall Age: 39 Years Hunting: 29 Favorite Hunting Weapon: bow Marriage Statues: Married Kids: How many: 6 Hunt mostly on Public or Privet land: Evenly split between Public & Private What do you Hunt, Water Fowl, Small Game, Big Game: Deer, Turkey & ducks Where do you Hunt, On the Ground or In a Tree: Both Do you Bait, Yes or NO: Yes, I bait for deer on public land in order to generate greater opportunity for limited duration hunting (to much time at work)No baiting on the private land as that is mostly farm land and has regular deer traffic. Hunting, Mornings or Afternoons: Both equally. Prefer the morning hunts in bow season as many archers stay home. How Did you get Started Hunting: Father started me Your Best Hunting Story: 2005-2006 Deer season (regular shot gun). I didn’t get out much because of work. I hunted only 2 hours on opening day, and saw nothing. Thursday brought a 10" snow fall to sussex county. The kids were home from school, and my office closed because of the snow. at about 12:30 in the afternoon. After I shoveled out the driveway and cars, I made a break for the woods for the afternoon hunt. I parked the car and walked through the deep snow to a place on public land where I had seen some afternoon activity the last week of the bow season. I covered about 3/4's of a mile when I entered the small valley where I would set up for the afternoon. The snow was deep, and silenced my movement. As I rounded the corner of the hill, I saw 2 deer standing in the snow about 90 yards away. They hadn't seen me, and were going about their business. I put the scope on the first, it was a doe. As I scanned to the second, the scope filled with Antlers. It was an 8 point buck! I lowered the cross hairs on the sweet spot, squeezed the trigger. As the buck dropped in his tracks, a larger 10 pointer appeared from a small grove of trees and took off with the doe. I was a little quick, but got a nice buck out of the deal. My largest on state land. Your Dream Hunt: Bow bear hunt in New Jersey. I know its just a dream Do you Fish: Yes Fresh Water or Deep Sea: Fresh What kind of Rod, Fly Rod, Surf Rod, Boat Rod: Ultra lights, fly rods.
