I paid $173 at Jeneks and I had keilbasa, salami, bologna, hot dogs, steaks, and the loins, you had two other specials made up, so at $220 you may have paid a fair price

sussex count butchers? I've been paying too much, $85 regular cut, roast, steaks and stew meat, the guy is fast, no complaints except $ he is in warwick NY

$65 is a good price as long as you believe you are getting YOUR meat and not someone else's.  I don't know about you guys, but the time between releasing your shot and bringing the game home, the steps taken are very important to preserving the game and making sure your meat is good.  How would you feel about taking all the necessary precautions and then get your meat back from a butcher to discover (or believe) that it's not meat from your deer?!  It's happened to me twice.  The first time I figured, OK, honest mistake.  The next time with a different butcher I decided I will do all the meat myself.  What a difference!

$65 is a good price...but preserving and butchering it yourself...PRICELESS!

I paid $65 for a guy who used to be a butcher at shop rite.. he is over in New Milford (bergen county) had it back to me the next day... he does so mny deer and mostly LEO's or people of service.. firemen etc... that he gives what he cuts... overall great guy and for $65... he will even vaccum pack it for u at no charge... was the first time i used him and i am going to keep on using him... i think he will take anyone now to butch tho he said its dying off... i brought him back an ugly 3 point taken sunday last weekend of NY... took the thing to try and save the herd from bad gene pool..

It's your choice, as always.  But do what most of us have done over the years.  Hook up with someone you know and trust and watch them butcher a deer or two.  You will learn.  There are great videos and books out there to learn from too.  You will make a few mistakes along the way, but eventually you can become your own butcher.  It's a great feeling knowing you are independent and don't need to rely on some butchers who are cheating you.  Note: not all butchers are bad, but it only takes one or two.  If you have a hunting buddy who highly recommends a particular butcher, go with that guy.  There are some out there that do an EXCELLENT job  and charge a fair price.  But where I live in Morris County there aren't too many around other than the butcher shops that require you to have your deer skinned.  If I am skinning the deer, I might as well just spend another 2 hours butchering.

i used to pay around $65 but i started to butcher my own deer about 3 years ago.  it takes me alot of time (because i'm still learning) but you know what you got and how you go it.  i just need to get an electric grinder.  that manual one kills me, especially on a big deer.

Yeah that sounds right.  When you start getting into all different kinds of sausages, hot dogs, jerky and whatever else you start paying lots of $$.  A standard (well packaged & clean) cut including roasts, steaks, chops, loins, stew meat and plain old regular ground meat should cost you $65.00.

I tryed doing it myself but didn't work out to well. Thank God I had the meat grinder for burger and smoker for jerkey.

I took mine to an undisclosed butcher I don't want to mention names.  THey were close to my house so it was convenient.  They did a great job but they charged me 75 dollars for 70lb field dressed doe that I shot to fill my earn a buck requirement a few years back.  I won't be going there with anymore little deer.

Funny that this thread came around again...the butcher that I used to use became a little less convenient, I was going to ask for names of good butchers near Bloomingdale.  I would go to Killer's Kitchen if I were closer
