NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 50 / Stand Placement Ethics....

Today I went to scout a park in the Monmouth county Park system, and I noticed in a couple of locations I was considering putting my stand, people had nailed into a the trees, name plates with their name and permit numbers on it....

It was like they were reserving the tree so nobody else could take it.

Now my question is this....if its a public park, and there is no stand there...would I be wrong to put my stand in that place? I mean who thinks they can claim a spot????

I agree that they shouldn't claim their spots, but you have to be smart about this. If you dont want your stand stolen or destroyed then I would stay away from those spots.

I think its one of thier rules, hunters have to state whos stand it is. Im not sure why but my brother said he came across stands that were tagged up with names and permit numbers.

On UBNJ hunts you must put your name and UBNJ# on your stands...

If a club wants to make a rule like that its up to them, but on public land that is nonsense!  The problem is though, in reality you probably can't use the tree becuase the the guy is gonna come back at some point. Not good ethics on this hunters part.

you cant lay claim to something you dont own!
people kill me with their actions.
if a hunter is in his stand on public land i will give him his area and then some. if he is not there then its for anyones use to hunt that area

I agree you don't own the spot.  The reason people probably put name plates on is for the Monmouth Park rule that all stands have permit numbers on them.

I hunt Monmouth county parks and I have to put my permit number on it. You yourself could go in with a climber and hunt next to his tree but if he comes to hunt  the question is do you come down and find another spot because you are in a portable treestand and the treestand is there is his and if you dont move you will probably ruin his hunt. Well thats the question I guess it depends what type a hunter are you. I personally would just leave his spot alone and find another the parks are BIG I dont want that type of Drama in my life.. But this again is coming from me a person that has a stand there

some of these guys had no stands and they were putting tags on the trees so they can put up there stands later.

if the hunter is not there you can hunt it.
i would not move either if he came to his spot to hunt and found me in his area. sorry this is public land we are talking about. first come first served!

On a couple county park hunts (i don't have any currently up) i would hang a tag with my permit number and name on the tree i would be climbing in.  I had a couple times were guys had an attitude about me using my climber in areas that i had scouted and even some that i had baited without a tag.  Basically the way i looked at it was, this is where i'm going to be, but i don't have a lock on.  I'm not laying claim but putting the sign out of don't be surprised if i'm here and in a climber.  I know personally i wouldn't climb next to someone else's area they scouted and are actively hunting.  If you use a lock on its easy to find someone's hunting area because there is a stand there, not so much when they use a climber.  I would respect someone's tagged tree as if it were a lock on.  I would hope the same is true from everyone else.  like assumpink hunter said, there is plenty of park out there to hunt, why ruin both your hunts over being bull headed.

All depends to me. First, I don't want any type of problem. Second, it could be someone who has hunted the same area since they opened the park years ago. I know a few people who have been hunting some of the monmouth county parks since they opened them and have hunted the same spot for years. It could also be someone who just found a spot and just decided to claim it before someone else came. The parks are so big, I would just let it be and find another spot. That's just me.
