I had a big doe with two fawns about 50yds out yesterday. She bleated (sounded more like a grunt) really low toned and loud. The two fawns ran to her side immidiatley. Question is.... Do does use that as a warning, like a snort? I was wondering if mabey she picked my scent up. I wish I could get my kids to listen as well as those two fawns

I have heard doe make a higher pitched grunt that doesnt sound like the can...
As for getting the kids to listen, make them think there is a guy hiding in every tree with an arrow with their name on it....... |

MR,
Yes does grunt, as well as bleat... The bleat is a general vocalization and can have many uses based on its tone, (according to researchers). What you heard was likely a "contact bleat", which is the mothers way of saying I am here...where are you... This is the call that can be used all year round to bring both male and female deer closer... JC |

| Thanks JC, It's the first time I ever heard a deer vocalize, I thought it was all a myth for awhile there. Just wasn't expecting it to be so loud and deep. Pretty cool though | ||

I thought it was all a myth for awhile there If you can spare a few bucks ($20), pick up one of M.A.D calls new inhale/exhale calls. Not only does the call produce both bleats and grunts it allows you to do all kinds of variations as well. All in one package. In addition to the call you get a nice CD explaining how to use it, and explaining the various bleats and grunts that deer make. The video had a bunch of actual recordings of deer making the sounds as well...An excellent tool that might come in handy under the right circumstances... Finally, let me say...if you have never heard a buck..."growl"...let me be the first to warn you. If you ever experience that sound while you are in your stand...you better hope you have a good safety harness...because you with think the Jersey Devil itself was making that noise....

| I gave a soft doe grunt with my voice to a deer that was walking past out of range. It ended up being a button buck that must have been seperated from it's mother, it came running right to my tree and started bawling like you couldn't believe. It just stood at the base of my tree, looking up hill for it's mother, calling like crazy, nonstop for 2-3 minutes. It was so loud I finally told the deer to shut up. | ||

| Want to talk doe bleat and fawn cry get a daisey deer call. Its wooden and like a harmonica with 2 plastic end caps and the reed is inside the wood. Not sure where to get one at but if you ever see one, get it.Been using it for years and called many to it. The big river call is great also and worth getting if you can find it both does and most bucks come to it. | ||
