I get on with the story..........For those of you who don't know, I shot a doe last night and jumped her.
I got about 2 hours total sleep last night. Was up way to early and got to mu hunting spot at about 6:30a.m. I found the spot where she went in and I jumped her and started to follow what was a very faint blood trail at first. Little did I knwo I would be heading into one of the most impenitrible jungles I have ever been in!
I found some blood spots and statred to get on my hands and kness becayse it kept getting thicker and thicker. As I was crawling I was finding blood on the left side of the trail and not the right. She was rubbing on a few plants and spreading some blood.
I soon came to a clearing after being on my hands and knees for two hours finding blood. I lose the trail in this clearing and circle for 30 min.'s On a hunch I take one of 2 trails down the hill and find her blood again.
Again I was forced on my hands and knees due to the crazt vegitation. The blood seems to be flowing now pretty good on the left side. I have a pic of it and I will post. I'm getting psyched even though it is slow going finding, and crawling.
It soon opens up into an open field and I see blood where she stopped to figure which way to go. It was pooled up and very dark blood. Again, I lose the trail.
I know circle for and hour and then grid the area and find NOTHING. Its as if she just stopped bleeding! By now its close to 1P.M. and it is HOT. I am so bummed and pissed off I start to wander around all the trails and areas to see if I see her or blood. I get nothing.
It's 3 p.m. by the time I get back to the car, I think I sweat out all fluid from the past week. I am just bummed. That is by far the hardest deer I have ever tracked. She must have ran close to 350-400 yards. It was insane. I guess the Bears and Yotes have some food. I still have that pit in my stomach though. I hate that feeling. On the good side I found where some of the big boys live and some new trees to hang a stand on. I'll post pics when I figure it out.............hanks for your help guys and gals

Well it sounds like she didn't stop to bed down in the thickets and left for open areas, sounds like she may not be seriously hurt and will survive, just a hunch.
Posted:  03 Oct 2007 4:22 PM
Actually I hope she does. I feel bad either way. Out of respect for the deer I wish I found her.

Elusive - in all seriousness, you did a heck of job trying to track that deer for 8 hrs, which is better than probably 75% of most hunters.  Alot would've given up after a couple hrs.  Keep up the good work; you'll get one.

elusive back in 2001, I hit a deer on the last day of the extended bow season, he was a least a 140" 8 pointer, he was near if not over 200lb. I watched that SOB run and fall, he went up on his back legs like a horse and slow fell to his right, 20 mins went by, no movement, all of a sudden he got up and walked off, I backed out and came back the next day, we searched for hours upon hours and came up empty

That sucks, sounded like a great deer too. There are some BIG deer up there if you find the right spot

If you look at the trees in the background, that where she entered the woods. Hang a 90 to the left about 75 yards where she entered, thats where I shot her.

This is how its done.  When you lose blood you take logical routs and you will usually connect again.  Deer even double back on their own trail to lose you - especially on light snow - or swing back off to the side to watch you track by and see if you are following them or if you are just a wandering human.

That means that you are an ethical hunter and a good man.
I bet that you learned alot today about deer and tracking.  Those kind of days make us better hunters.

You are getting more of an education and thats what counts.

Coyottes have to eat also so the animal didn't go to waste if it did die somewhere. So do the other animals and birds. Nature is harsh but also forgiving.

You never stop learning

Thanks for the compliments guys and girls

You get an E for effort. You did your best to search for her cough that one up and get back out there and try again it happens to all of us at least once. Sorry to hear the outcome was not in your favor.

Given the sign on that arrow, and the blood on the plants-she was hit good. definately a fatal hit.

Was the pool that you found last smushed arround or was it like the deer just stood there bleeding-A smushed pool would indicate the deer bedded there and likely died-being carried away by a bear-If it was pooled as if the deer was standing-it could have very well clotted up after such a long bleed, and she kept bleading internally-clotting is often caused by broadheads that are no where near sharp enough-Make sure your broad heads are razor sharp.Even some new heads right out of the package aren't sharp enough!

Its been two days, and last night never got below 60 degrees-Even if you find her now-its rotten meat. Chalk it up to a learning experience. But i realy hate waisting a deer

Yeah, that one picture of blood on the stalks was impressive and appears to be a crap load of blood.  Too bad you were not able to retrieve, but I commend you for going to great lengths in trying to locate her.
