Just saw one quite a bit stockier than this lil guy in Wildcat @ ~5pm. Had a deer get spooked quite a ways away and was trying to figure out what spooked it, though it was a s.g. gunner I saw earlier but he was walkin the power lines quite a bit away from me by then... Then I saw him in between the trees ~100 yards away... scared the crap outs me... Why do you sound so calm in the video? Bears give me the creeps ![]() __________________ Tight Lines, Wet Nets, Filled Tags and Full Bags

About two weeks ago I was hunting Berkshire Valley, and thought it was odd that after sitting quiet for about an hour, didn't really hear anything starting to move again. Got bored and decided to walk a bit. About 300 yards down the path I hear something running up on me. Figuring it's a deer I hunker down. At about 75-80 yards out I see it's a bear, and while not at full sprint, is definantly "jogging" towards me. So I stand up, wave the arms make noise, and circle out of his path. It stopped about 20 yards from me. Sniffed a bit, then walked on.
I REALLY don't like running into bears on the ground w/ just the bow. Wasn't a really big one when I finally got a good look at him, but at first sight when I saw him trotting at me, he looked like a monster! Funny how adrenaline does that to you. Since I've seen him, I've actually re-thought going into the woods w/ the bow in the pitch black to get set up. What do you guys think? |

I'm certain that 95% of these bears will run like hell if they KNOW YOU ARE THERE...
If you jump them... that may inspire a fight/flight reaction and they just may choose fight... Hope your draw is fast and your aim is true at that point Then u gotta survive long enough for him to bleed out... heh.. lots of blood in a black bear.
Anyhow I think you're pretty safe as long as you stay alert. Statistics say its really unlikely... but the environment those statistics are mostly based on are one with vast amounts of wooded area and small number of bear.. we now have the inverse of this situation and the outcome may very well change soon... The odds per encounter may be the same but the more times the dice are rolled, the more chance for a bad outcome... Don't stop hunting the ground cause of bears... If most of you are like me, you taste pretty bad anyhow... they will just spit you out
(Note: see what a few days does to perspective? Just wait till I run into my next black bear in zone 6... lol) __________________ Tight Lines, Wet Nets, Filled Tags and Full Bags

I completely agree, unless there are some ununusual circumstances (startled, wounded, cubs, etc) a black bear will always choose to go the other way. I've come in contact w/ bears in the woods now probably about 6-8 times (even a truly big one out in NEPA) and once they knew I was there, never had a problem. The big one in PA kinda walked parallel with me for a while, so that was a bit unsettling, since I had a bow.
Guess I was just realizing that there's been a few times now that, during the daylight, bears have failed to see me (and if you knew how big I was, you'd find that hard to believe ). I'm thinking going in during the pitch black where I've recently seen bear might not be the best idea, as a "surprise" encounter might turn out bad for both of us (I get eaten, he get's indigestion )

In the video it appears to to have a tag in each ear, which I think makes him a problem bear

In the video it appears to to have a tag in each ear, which I think makes him a problem bear NJDF&W uses the metal ear tags for identification of all bears they come in contact with during their trap & tag research. The likely reason for the dual tags is because that particular bear has been probably been trapped more than once. The last bear I assisted the Division with had been tagged as a cub in one ear during a den survey, & an additional tag was secured to the other ear during his recapture. Since tags tend to be pulled out by the bears over time, (particularly male bears when fighting) the biologists also tattoo the tag number inside the lower lip of the bear as a back-up I.D. Problem bears are often tagged with brightly colored "cattle tags" in their ear(s) for easy identification, should they again engage in destructive or aggressive behaviors. The tags are oversized & numbered to aid in identifying a particular bear from a distance. Here's a sample of the "cattle tag":
