to me the it's not worth the time or trouble to get the supplies and assemble them.
it's common nowadays to find bargain $30-40 loc on styles stands at Dick's or other places that have a warranty, are TMA certified, and have passed a saftey inspection, also they are rated for a certain weight capacity, and come with a saftey belt or harness.
The homemade one,you would have no legal recourse should it fail, malfunction and the party sustains injuries.

looks like it would work, easier to buy one i think.

Doesn't seem to be anything on the bottom of the stand to grip the tree. Usually when you apply weight to the stand the bottom will dig in the tree. This one seems like it would be wobbily

If you're patient and look on ebay you can get some really good deals on tree stands.  I picked up one this summer that i ended up paying $12 for.  Yes its used so you need to inspect it/replace straps but new the stand was ~$100 (i know because i already own the same stand) I'd rather get a TMA certified stand used for less than what it would cost to make one at home.

i have been welding up my own for at least 15 years.
i still have the originals, just paint and new seats every 3 years.

i don't make stands for anyone, just not worth it in this day.

but i have never had a single problem. they are 1"x1/8 angle, expanded metal and chain. they were running about $12 a piece, plus my time. with the price of steel going up i haven't run the numbers again.
they are rock solid, not too heavy and have killed lots of deer for me.

OK, let me get this straight...

A treestand that you've handcrafted yourself, checking every weld & fastener as if your very life depended on it (because it will)...

OR

A $30.00 "door-buster special" hang-on stand, mass produced in CHINA! (you know, the country with the highest consumer safety standards - that brought us toxic children's toys & contaminated pet food meal)

...either way, don't forget your safety harness!

Why would you risk your life in a 30 dollar treestand? Your lifes not worth 80 dollars for a better one? Or 150 dollars for an even better one?
I, for one, am not gonna take a chance in some cheap ass stand. I wanna come home to my kids.

What's nice about ub's treestands is no bolts or cables to worry about. very nice ub. not very compact to transport, but very nice to hunt outta.

Very Nice

i agree that it would be cheaper to make out of wood.
But After looking at the picture for a while, you have to believe that the weekest point in the design is where the base and the backbone meet. how long before the bolt or screw comes loose. I think it would only be safe for one season.

my stand? only three bolts on it, they hold down the seat. everything is welded. the weakest point is you have to change the seat every 4 years because of rot. these things are rock solid, not creeking, popping or groaning. unlike those $30 aluminum stands that use a 2" wide nylon strap to hook to the tree.
i can't credit the design. doug brown (ubnj southern) let me hunt from a few of his before. he gave me a stand and a cut sheet. he has made about 100 stands over the years, me about 30. thanks doug.

my stand?

No ub, I think he's refering to the stand from the link in the 1st post in this thread.
Its' "backbone" appears to be a 4"X4" post that is either bolted or screwed to a wooden platform.

sorry.
not a chance of me ever getting in that stand!. wood, twisted link chain, that thing will cost you your life, and many deer because that stand will talk as you move around.

There has been recalls on $180.00 and up treestands also! The only treestand I can trust is a ladder stand or personally build one myself. Make sure when installing a tree stand you use some extra precautions .Maybe add one or two more rachet straps. And instead of a whimppy chain or cable to lock it .Get something that is alot more bolt cutter proof. This will help prevent thefts and tie to the tree better.
Posted:  15 Aug 2008 11:59 AM

I would never set foot on that stand.

Buy a ladder or lock on!

Be safe always
