NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / How To / Cowboy Action Shooting Course
Posted:  29 Sep 2007 1:15 PM   Last Edited By: nightstalker911
I've been wanting to try COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING for years. But where can you go to do it.
Hell, why not in my "Back Yard" !

So I built my own Cowboy Action Shooting Course on my Range.
And it cost me nothing to do it. All surplus and scavanged stuff.

The course is designed to feature, Shooter movement, multiple targets, Multiple "unusual" positions, all on a Timed course.
With a Western Flair !
Fired with Iron Sighted guns only.

Is it fun, OH YEA !!!!!!!!!!

So here's the Course.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/Nightstalker911/NJ%20Hunter/DSC01198.jpg

The Course starts at the 100yd. Line.
On the whistle(time starts) the shooter will run to the First stage.

THE AMBUSH (70yds.)

The shooter will pick up a Centerfire lever action rifle, chamber a rd. and fire five rds. at the Square metal plate. 5 points for each hit.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/Nightstalker911/NJ%20Hunter/DSC01200.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/Nightstalker911/NJ%20Hunter/DSC01201.jpg

The shooter then advances to Stage 2

The HOPALONG CASSIDY (40yds.)

The shooter will mount the "Horse" and remove his .22 cal. rifle from the scabbard, firing 5 rds. at the Metal Chicken targets. 5 points for each "knockdown"
The shooter will then place his rifle in the scabbard before moving onto the next position.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/Nightstalker911/NJ%20Hunter/DSC01205.jpg

The next position is,

HIGH NOON (15yds.)

The shooter will pick up his .22cal handgun from a table located to the side of the range, move to the center of the "street" and fire five rds. at the Clay pigeon targets on the shelf.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/Nightstalker911/NJ%20Hunter/DSC01207.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/Nightstalker911/NJ%20Hunter/DSC01208.jpg

After placing his handgun on the table, the shooter will advance to the:

CARD TABLE SHOOT (1 yd.)

The shooter must be fully seated before starting the exercise.
The shooter will come to a standing position, pick up his Handgun from the table and issue a VERBAL DIROGATORY CHALLENGE before shooting.
(ONE HANDED - NO SIGHTS USED )
The Verbal challenge must be audible to the shooters at the 100yd. line (LOUD !)

Scoring

5 pts. in the body
10pts. in the red Square
25pts. in the head (jug) Your gonna get wet !!

And now a short Video

null

The time stops on the last shot at the "Card table".

For every 30sec. you take to fire the course you will lose 5 points.
So you need to Shoot straight, and Shoot fast.

And anybody can have fun at it.

Here's Ms. NS giving it a try.
Notice she "BLEW" the target all to hell !!

That's .357Mag. with full power loads she's firing.

Video

I've got a bunch of "Cowboys" coming here tomorrow for a shootout. It should be a blast !!

The next stage I'm adding will be a window frame with a curtain that you have to pull back to shoot.

Paul,

Man I can't wait.      This was a great idea. It makes it more interesting. I have everything packed up and ready to be loaded in the truck. I sent you a text msg asking what time do you want me there to help set-up. Call me.

BTW, If you know who brings that damn parrot. I'm gonna shoot it off his shoulder.

BTW, I'm bringing the hand cannon.

Tom, I have your new gun in the original box waiting to go home with you.

NS,
My only suggestion is at the last station you have to say the 'verbal derogatory challenge' using your MOST CONVINCING western accent.
I'm kinda partial to Al Swearengen from Deadwood.  Always eloquent, and all the more threatening thus.  (C'mon.. NOOOO ONE says "c**ks**ker" like Al!!)

I had a guy that fired my course about a month ago. Now he's a pretty good shot on the Regular ranges, but on a stress course like this
Well, he pretty near missed everything (to his frustration) up to the Card table.
Well, when he yelled out his "challenge", everyone was a little shocked at what came out of his, normally polite lips !
Glad I ain't got no neighbors !!!!!!!
