NJ Hunter / New Jersey Politics & Guns / NJ Firearms ID Card / FID background question
Posted:  24 Sep 2007 10:54 PM
I just applied to get my FID / 1 hand gun permit a few days ago and I'm starting to wonder if it will get denied or not. I have a perfectly clean record so I'm not worry about that, its the mental health part I think my bite me. When I was 14 or so I was flagged as being "very angry" despite never hurting anyone or having a police record and remember being testing..seeing a therapist for awhile, at no time was I given any meds.

Now fast forward until I'm 21 I enlist in the Air Force  I under go a background check and obtain a secret security clearance for my job which was no problem getting. Near the end of my enlistment I started having family problems(father dying, GF breakup, etc) and thus it effected me. My higher ups wanted me to be checked out and was brought to the hospital they were going to get the magistrate (sp?) to admit me for a few days but I quickly entered a plea bargain with them and they had told them to forget it, they would take care of it. It's now been a few years since I left the Air Force...didn't want to reenlist after that. I got a honorable discharge and everything has been fine since.

So being that I was able to get and hold a secret security clearance and it wasn't revoked during the bad phase i went threw should I worry that it will get rejected due to almost being admitted? Will they check my VA medical records as well? I was stationed in another state, so do they only check NJ hospitals or all?

Look at question #s 22 & 25, if you are honest I think your "OK", if not then you will be rejected

I won't get into my whole story until my case is over, but I will say this. Anything you write as an answer for #25 will be used against you! In my case, I volunteered seeing a psychiatrist for 6 months to a year when I was 17. That was 18 years ago. I was denied, and am in the hole $4300 for an attorney and a court admissible phsych evaluation to prove what I already know, I am a fully functioning successful member of society. I understand and agree with the system, but too little information is available for the general public about the parameters, and because of it, I am a victim of circumstance for being honest. I will tell you that anything you write will need to be accompanied by a certified document from a medical doctor stating that you either no longer suffer from these afflictions, or that they will not affect your ability to posses a firearm.
