Lots of other hunters, then once the pheasant season opens forget it.

I cant lie though, there are deer in there.

the zone 8 supposed to be pretty good although only a small peice of BR. Most of the property and Pheasant hunting is done in the zone 9 portion. I believe rt. 206 splits the zones. Be sure what zone your in ,as the Co's there do there jobs and do them well I might add.

LOTS of hunting pressure. I spotted 4 hunters in their stands on saturday on my way out of there... also accidentally walked right under another guys stand. If you don't mind trecking thru the real thick stuff back by the swamp, there are a lot of places that hold deer in Black River.

Ack23... I kicked up a big buck while Pheasant hunting there last Saturday. Not much of a rack, but he was huge. He took off into the swamp, but he'll be back. Good luck

You bet Dogs also got to chase down a cripple for some guys w/o a dog, so they had a well rounded day. Rain wasn't that bad

Great to hear..Very encouraging! My brother and I will be there all day. We've walked the property a few times in the last few weeks to get a feel for the place (we've never hunted there) and havent seen any deer. Some good rubs around, relatively fresh, but I wonder if the deer that made them are still around? While I would love to take a nice buck (yes I have a bonus permit), I would ultimately appreciate anything at this point since I havent got a deer this year.

Ack what area of black river are you hunting
Posted:  03 Jan 2008 3:07 PM
we are still trying to decide where to setup...Probably back near the pine stands behind the fields on the Pleasant Hill side...Seen some good rubs back there, a natural funnel or 2, and decent cover...Would love to get into the swamp but dont have waders and its not completely frozen.

I would REALLY appreciate any help/suggestions...Unfortunately my time in the woods is limited this year and I would love to pull a deer out of there!

Ilike to go in by the pleasent hill farm By the rehilbilation center. In behind the big pile of fire wood where the old friut stand used to be. A little less pressure over there

We got a couple out of there during 6 day

OK - Thanks...Do you think the place will be hit hard this saturday? Deer & Pheasant?

Great first hunt in NJ! Even posted a few lines from my treestand earlier this morning in "the lounge".
Drove down to Morris County at 4 this morning to pick up my brother. Arived at Black River around 6. In the stand by 6:30. It was a beautiful morning to be out. Didnt see any other hunters in my area (although I was way back in there!) Loads of squirrels making noise early. Single doe comes in at 9am about 70 yards through the woods. Bring the gun up, adjust the magnification on my scope to 7, and click...Gun doesnt fire. Still not sure why, but try a second time and boom - shot off. She walks off the way she came in. Everything (except the "click") felt good. Sit in my stand a while to mark the spot where I last saw her. AS I'm looking over, I notice a broken limb on a branch next to me. Thinking that the shot got deflected, I get down and start to look for sign...Nothing. My bro and I searched the area for an hour...Nothing. Clean miss thanks to the branch. A little disapointed but a great day nonetheless! Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice on Black River. We'll definitely be back again during permit shotgun!

Side note - After we got out of the woods, we drove over to a different lot and I met jerseyhunter!! What a coincidence. Nice talking to you jerseyhunter!

Good luck to all today and the rest of the season. By the way, got my brother hooked on NJH...He's "bACKstrap"

What Matty said...good for early bow...sucks after small game, pheasant, etc. start...and buy life insurance before you get out for opening day of firearms season.

Also expect idiot butthole yuppies hiking in there to give you a load of chit...

There will be pheasant hunters there
until feb.

There are plenty of deer. If you get down on the railroad bed early bird hunters will push them to you. When you see your first pheasant hunter of the day (usually by 8:00) you can go home.
