Don't know if anyone here hunted that Elk Township ground on RT 538, known as Elephant Swamp, but that is no longer open to hunting. I know for many years it was hunted very hard, by ALOT of people. Now there is a nice stone parking area with split rail fence and the tracks have been designated a "Rails to Trails" project, and the 400 or so acres is now closed to hunting.

It was very well known to be open to hunting, but they have done a poor job of getting the information out that it is now closed, and they are enforcing it. Just figured I'd pass that along.

Used to rabbit hunt and bird hunt the fields down through that piece when I was younger, a lot of that woods was owned by Foote.

Thanks for the info.

i heard that was comming. good luck stopping everyone. that county piece is surrounded by private land, they all hunt it. i heard they were going to put a trail from the new houses by Vandergrifts to the railroad bed. i don't know how they can close the whole block down when only the bed is the "trail". there are tons of deer in that place. if they do keep people out the farmers around it are going to suffer more crop damage then they do now. Fazzio, Grosso, Acramin's, they all suffer bad crop damage. who's going to inforce, the elk cops that hunt it?

Yeah, Milt and the boys will probably do "undercover" work during season...pretending to hunt but really looking for violators.

I know people will still access it from the private ground around it. I think they will just be getting the people they can by snagging them at the tracks. Just passing that along for those who previously went in from the tracks.

There use to be a ton of deer in there. Allowing hunters in knocked the numbers down some, but you are right, those guys will start to see some significant crop damage again if the guys allowed to hunt the private ground don't do the job. There will still be plenty of pressure I'm sure due to all the private ground around it.

I stopped at his house one day, he didn't even ask what I was doing. He just shouted "You got your gun? We have been pushing a big one around" Those guys are maniacs, you know they will be in there keeping an eye on the place.

He made alot of contacts over the years and they hunt alot of places.

Do you remember that buck he killed a few years ago with main beams as thick as a 2x4? That thing was a monster. High gross score but I think the net suffered because it was so uneven...but who cares, it was a beauty.

I don't "know" that is was closed to hunting because of the Rails to Trails, I was just asking what was going on with the parking area, and it lead to them telling me the township land was closed to hunting. The Rails to Trails program just happened to be in the same sentence.

yes it's a nice buck, killed on a quad.

sounds like the same tactic "they" used for the land behind the elk soccer fields. township land is closed, unless you are on the payroll. then hop in the bus and we can drive any property around, even posted lands.
everyone in the township has had the same problems with the same bus. after the fish and game warnnings it slowed down a lot, wouldn't look good if it made the papers.

We went to a bunch of twp. meetings over this bike trail. And nothing was supposed to happen. Next thing I know they are hauling dirt down my street out of the state woods. I'm friends with four people who's property(where the golf carts are for sale) goes right to the tracks and now they are worried about getting robbed even more than they do now. You know that trail goes right to Glassboro?????????? Thats a no brainer that you just opened up crime central.

Just about every quad or bike in this neighborhood has been stolen and if they were found it was back on the old RR bed.

Anyway, I had a CO stop here a couple weeks back and I did a little bitching and asked him the law for that trail. He told me that that property was owned by the twp. because it was a Conrail right-a-way, not state woods or private property, so the twp. could do what they want with it. He told me that F&G looks at it as any other roadway, hunt right up to it, carry a weapon across it, but don't shoot across it.

The only thing other than a hwy. from Glassboro to Williamstown is that all day today I heard quads ripping up and down it. I know Williamstown PD drives up and down it but they are not there all day. I hunt all that property along the tracks on the private side(seven pieces) and I don't see the deer activity that I have in years past. Maybe when I start hunting it I will see it differently, I hope.

Yeah I remember that. Supposedly just stepped in front of him on the trail as he was riding. Was a great buck though.

I'm not on the payroll, but I was always told the township land was open to township residents...until now. I don't hunt it, but it was nice to know if I needed a new spot, I had one close to home. Now I guess I'll have to get a job with the township.

I've always question that. How does that really work? I get told both sides around here. I'm in Monroe Twp. and they have a lot of property, some I hunted and now it says keep out.

I don't know. I didn't even inquire about it...I knew someone on the Committee who knew I hunted and he offered the info. Maybe he was hoping for some venison?
