It is always special when you can see a buck grow become a mature adult. I have had the pleasure of hunting a few different bucks over the years that I watched grow into very smart mature adult bucks.

My favorite thing to do with the trail pics of deer I get is to follow individual deer consecutive years in a row

How can you tell if its the same deer? On my pics I have many scrub bucks how can you tell which one lives and becomes the better buck the following year.

You have kept him around this long and yea he is most definatly a shooter 8 but if you can hold out till next year you may end up with a nice 10.

But if it is public and there is a chance someone else may tag him then this is the year to hang him on your. If you have no pressure for as hard as it may be I think letting him grow another year will be well worth the wait.

Good luck to you and that is a fine Deer you have there thanks for sharing these cool pics.!

On the younger bucks its tough to tell unless they have markings in their coats such as this double white patch, but on older bucks you can tell by the antler configuration which is almost like a finger print.

As was said, the distinctive markings on the young deer are what helps to identify them. I have a buck that has a black circle patch of hair on his left hip that has been in the area around my stand. He was a spike last season and this year he is a 5 pointer. Sometimes they have a torn ear or a bad leg like the Doe named Lucy that lives in my neighborhood. If you see a deer enough times you can tell which ones are which on most occasions.

Yup.  This particular buck is easy to recognize because of the double throat patch, but I have other deer in the area which I recognize from year to year simply because of such things as their rack, or the stand site they seem to frequent, or the other bucks they seem to hang out with early season.

There are many ways to identify deer from year to year.
