WELCOME NON-HUNTERS
We hope that by viewing this page you will learn a little more about what we believe in and stand for. We are your friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers. We could be your doctor, lawyer, accountant or your employer. The practice of hunting is not about the indiscriminate killing of animals, nor is it about acting out some macho fantasy. Hunting is a tradition; it’s about sharing memories and experiences with your friends and family while enjoying the outdoors. It is about teaching our youth to respect and appreciate all wildlife, and manage it as a renewable resource so it can be enjoyed by future generations. Most importantly, hunting is about honesty. It's honesty about what we do and why we do it. It seems these days that much of our time, energy, and resources are dedicated to defending our tradition of hunting. Anti hunting organizations would like to see an end to all hunting. We have been harassed, prodded, and threatened - yet we have never retaliated or resorted to such behaviors. We are not trying to force people to participate in the tradition that we love; we respect each person's decision to hunt or not to hunt. Our concern is when people try to attempt to force their lifestyle or beliefs on us. We simply want to continue the tradition of hunting with our families and friends and enjoy nature in peace. However, this is not the way the anti-hunting/animal rights extremists are portraying us. These groups feel that humans have no superiority to animals in any way. The great majority put animals on a higher pedestal than people. Take for instance this quote from Ingrid Newkirk, founder of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): "We'd be against animal research even if it resulted in a cure for AIDS." Or the Fund for Animals Director of Campaigns Mike Markarian, commenting on the documented fact that hunters donate over 2 million pounds of venison annually through Hunters Helping the Hungry: " We believe it is more of a public relations gimmick on the part of the hunting industry". The fact remains that animal extremist groups give little, if anything, of their own resources to help mankind. They do not use their funds to directly help animals, but use their vast financial resources to pay for the high salaries of their upper management, use the money for fundraising, or use it for dishonest, inaccurate and distorted reporting about hunting or other animal use issues. It is time you got the message of what they are about, but more importantly, it is time you got the message of what we’re about. We will no longer sit idly by while they misrepresent hunters. In fact, if you weigh the benefits that hunters provide it is pretty hard to argue with the facts: FACT: Wildlife is thriving: There are more Deer, Elk, Turkey, Pronghorn, Sheep, etc. now than there were at the turn of the century due to the conservation efforts of hunters. FACT: Hunters pay for wildlife: Nearly all of the funding for the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife is derived from hunters and anglers. It is from revenue generated by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, permits and stamps. Hunters bought a total of $3,162,921.00 worth of hunting licenses in 2003; and this does not include revenue generated from stamps or permits. The revenue goes into the dedicated Hunters and Anglers Fund, used exclusively by the Division of Fish and Wildlife. The Division of Fish and Wildlife also receives funding, indirectly from hunters and anglers, through the Sportfish and Wildlife Restoration Programs. These federal programs tax, at the manufacturer level, hunting and fishing equipment and motorboat fuels. The US Fish and Wildlife Service then allocates the revenue to the states using various formulas. Many people are unaware of this program since the tax is built into the cost paid at the retail level when equipment is purchased. FACT: Hunting is safe: the odds of being killed while hunting by another hunter is .0015-.00425%. For non-hunters, the odds of being killed by a hunter are: 1 fatality for every 12 million-recreation days of hunting. You are 20 times more likely to die from an insect sting than even being wounded by a hunter. The record for bow hunting is better still. In the 40+ years of bow hunting in New Jersey, there has not been a single recorded incident of a bowhunter injuring a non-hunter. FACT: There are no feasible alternatives to hunting. While many anti-hunting groups like to talk about transplants and contraceptives, the reality is these programs are extremely expensive and are marginally successful in even small, controlled settings. The harsh reality is that if not properly managed, many animal populations will grow out of control to a point where nature will balance them back. This is done through disease and starvation. Starvation is a long, slow, painful, undignified and inhumane way for any animal to die, but, unfortunately, this happens all too frequently. However, this is the preferred choice of the animal extremists. Fact: When game animals are not hunted, they outgrow the land’s ability to provide food doing years of damage to seedling growth and woodlot habitats. FACT: Poachers are NOT Hunters: It seems that the media gets a hold of a news story about an animal that was shot illegally, and say it was shot by a hunter. The reality is that poachers who are criminals, not hunters, do these violations. The animal rights fanatics love these stories because they label the poacher as a "hunter" and start manipulating perceptions of hunters. Hunters support license revocations, stiff fines and confiscation of equipment for Poachers. Hunters are responsible for 95% of the calls turned into TIP (Turn in Poacher) lines across the country. FACT: Hunters love and protect animals and the environment, while anti-hunters stereotype hunters as "bloodthirsty and sadistic killers". In reality, the opposite is true. Hunters have shouldered the cost of conservation for the good of all animals. Hunting clubs protect deer and other game with feeding programs, habitat improvement, and stocking programs. Hunters willingly accept and support decisions made by wildlife management agencies for the good of all animals. Hunters fervently protect our wild lands to keep them free from development, pollution, and misuse. FACT: Significant numbers of people hunt and the numbers of hunters remain steady. In New Jersey over 93,656 hunting licenses were bought in 2003. Interestingly, the number of women hunters has been increasing recently and continues to rise. FACT: The majority of Americans support legal hunting. A poll conducted by the highly respected research firm Zogby International in December of 2003 found that Ninety-two percent of gun owners and 73% of non-gun owners said hunting is a tradition and is essential to wildlife management. FACT: Wildlife management is a scientific, biological and environmental science based on fact and evidence. Wildlife policy cannot be managed by emotion, distortion, lies, or hysteria. We hope that when it comes down to it, facts and logic will overcome the emotional manipulation that anti-hunting organizations use as a tool to mislead the general public. We hope you understand and will support our right and duty to hunt as a necessary, ethical, and humane wildlife management tool. For those who have no opinion on hunting, please weigh ALL of the relevant facts before coming to a conclusion. Thank you - NJHunter __________________ SEMPER FIDELIS
