Yes, I got my first deer from the ground.

Monday Sept 10th @ 7:00am I was in the woods and I come up on 2 DOEs & 3 Fawns. I was about 50yards away and came to full draw. As I was letting it back down I had a feeling I can make the shot. I then redrew the bow & loosed a arrow. It hit her little far back in the ponch and out the otherside taking out the sack, liver & both lunges. I found the deer 2.5hrs later so to be safe I gave it to a friend that has to many dogs, since it is really hot out and she was gut shot ( I mean she looked like a bomb went off in her ) This was my first deer from the ground with a bow.. Man I don't want to go up a tree anymore LOL. Sitting here thinking as I type I feel really bad for taking that far of a shot...I still need to find my arrow.

Chrism, I don't know what came over me.. That is the longest shoot other then 3-D.. I even got my range finder to see how far as I was waiting to start my tracking...I'll never do that shot again.

Holy crap...you did that with a long bow.  Not too be a dick, but I've seen your posts, you seem to have a head on your shoulders.  You know better than that.

Glad to hear that you recovered her, and congrats on the deer, even though I don't agree with the shot.

very far shot but not an impossible shot. I would practice a little more before taking a shot that long again glad to see you made the recovery but on hot days like this a shot should not be made unless you know for sure it will bring the animal down within a 100 yards because 30 minutes in this weather will spoil the meat. Is that you in the pic did you shave your head or did you lose it in Texas??

Congrats

Sometimes, in the moment, everything looks closer.  Twice I've taken turkeys at 45 yds, thinking they were about 30.  Then after the adrenaline wears off and you pace it out you are amazed.  Having the does next to the smaller fawns also makes them look closer.  Same with Tom turkeys next to hens.

Wow, so basically a 50 yard shot with traditional equipment, acknowledged to be out of your known effective range, gutshot, recovered, and given to a friend's dogs...literally.

Lots of lessons the be learned there, glad you were able to recover her...but I think you already know the error of your ways.

Not sure what I can say that won't come across as negative...constructive criticism...work on either practicing those ranges and make them part of your effective range (although 50 yards is a bomb of a shot with any bow at deer sized game IMHO), or practice self control in limiting yourself only to your effective range.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

WTG,

if i could do it i would always hunt from the ground.  it's easier with all the foliage.  when the foliage is gone it's time to climb...

I many a mistake my ranger find is off. I just used my friends and it came out to 30yards, but still it was to far and I shouldn't have taken the shot... It did look closer, but now I know for sure & I do feel a little better.. I also found my arrow.

What kind of range finder were you using that gave a reading of 50 yards when it was only 30?  That is waaayyyy off.  I've heard of some range finders being off but its usually only by a few yards.  You better send that thing back.  Congrats on the deer.

You are lucky you must have hit the liver . Most gut shot deer take 6-8 hours to die .

Sal, that looked like a big doe-the 135+ doe bow class is still open-if she weighed that much on check in-fill out the oustanding deer form and send it in.

Congrats on the kill
