Well, I started off getting into my stand in the am nice and early (40 minutes before light). Of course the sun starts to slowly rise and you can just start seeing your pins. Thinking I would have activity nice and early, I'm very anxious and ready. Well, lets just say I saw 1 deer and it stayed about 75 yards away and never even looked to come in towards me. Now, I'm a little mad due to the fact that I had about 10 deer every morning on my trailcam. What happened I have no idea. Could have been the lady in her backyard at around 6 am having a LOUD conversation. Also the way the deer usually come from but who knows?
Now, I go to another property for the afternoon. Get in stand around 4. Was in a strip of woods between 2 fields, with a pond behind me. I know this is a good area. Climb into the ladder stand we have up. 5:30, I have a small doe come out walking around for a good 20 minutes. Comes in at about 8 yards. Sorry, just out of spots...she gets a free pass...I won't shoot any small ones. Got great video of her though. Now, an hour later I hear another deer behind me. Turn around and look and it's a nice big doe. I put the video camera on her. As she's walking behind the tree, I draw on her. Try and stop her 4 times. On the fourth time, she stops and I let the arrow fly. I judged her for 25, but she must have been 30. I shot about 6 inches under her. With the right yardage, she would have been smoked. It was placed perfectly behind the shoulder and she was broadside. After that, I saw another 5 or 6 deer in the field to my left, they just never came in. No biggie, first day of the season. I'll be out monday afternoon for another crack at a doe!
