NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / How To / Baiting with acorns

What do you think? Am I the only anal one here or am I on to something?
1. it's free
2. it can't be detected by another hunter as a baited site.
3. it's more natural
4 you can turn the tree you hunt from into an oak and the only one who would know different would be a biologist. Surely not the deer.
5. alot less lighter/bulkier per area covered. hence a little goes along way.

opinions please, not that anyone would change my ways.

My front/back lawn has plenty of oaks. I always wanted to collect the acorns during leaf clean up and use them as bait. I know it works because friends of mine have done it. I think it is especially food for late season, when there is snow on the ground. I think this year I may try it...good luck!

Make sure you are using white oak acorns.

They tear the area up looking for them , esp in Jan/feb. I've also mixed some corn with some rock salt, about 5lbs of each which also had grat results. I take it the salt melts the foot of snow which reveals the corn. good luck to all.

One of the best baits out there.  I had a great situation several years back, not too long after they allowed baiting from an elevated position within 100yds.  The land behind my dads house was being developed, each new house had a basement, the land was a huge oak flat prior to development.  So all the trees left were oak (mostly white and chestnut) all the acorns would fall into the basements that were still exposed so I would just climb down there and sweep them up and place in large boxes.  I could have filled a pickup bed with all the acorns I got out of there in a very short time.

Mother nature is already baiting one of my spots with acorns. I checked out yesterday and deer were all over that place.

How does that stuff grow in the woods, or are you planting it in an open area?

I just rake out a bare patch... skuff up the soil and plant it.

I've always found where you find acorns, you find deer.  I would say that it will work out great for you.
