NJ Hunter / New Jersey Small Game & Waterfowl Hunting / Waterfowl / North Zone / 9/3 Goose report

Hunted the abandonded golf course this morning. Determining the safety zone is a little iffy there  until the leaves are off the trees. The main place I would expect the geese to tend to land is possibly safety zone.  I set up on the next fairway.  They came in exactactly where I expected, but not where I was.

I saw and heard them coming in about 6:45. They circled around the trees and I could see them lock wings to my right rear. If I wasn't in the lay out blind I could have spun around and shot, but I would have possibly rained pellets on a house and cars on the road.  I got out of the blind and I could spy on them feeding through some pines. They were close enough that I could have shot them on the ground if I were an unethical hunter and an unsafe hunter.

They meandered further and further into the safety zone. Finally I couldn't take it anymore so I left my gun at the blind and ran at them to flush them. If it wasn't in the safety zone I could have hammered them when they flew, they were really bunched up I probably could have had two birds per shot.  I was hoping they would circle around and come back but the did not.

I was going to hunt over water this evening, but I got lazy and here I am typing when I should be in the blind.

I found that my layout blind is not very comfortable. Next time I will use foam pads.

What layout blind do you have, how many decoys and what type of decoys did you use?

I have one of those Avery blinds. It has a bar that goes under the small of my back. Sort of like sleeping on a pull out couch. I have several foam hotseat type pads next time I will use them.

My decoy spread is small only about a dozen shells.  When I hunt with Dragthor we pool our dekes and get a pretty good spread

How well did you camo the blind? I'm guessing it's an Avery power hunter so it has stubble straps all over it so you could weave foilage into it. Second, if this field is all grass I like to use full bodies instead of shells. Shells are ok in corn, mixed with full bodies(like Bigfoot) but in grass they don't look so good. And a little flagging might have helped.
Sounds like a tough spot if the birds didn't even come in to at least check you out.

with my blind,i have the shadow grass,it was shiny when it was new so i dulled it up some with dirt, then i put grass, cornstalks or whatever is around me in it to camo it even more.

I had pine boughs in the stubble straps.

They came in circling around trees. I don't think they had a line of sight to my dekes.
