NJ Hunter / New Jersey Politics & Guns / NJ Firearms ID Card / Trouble buying Ammo
Posted:  28 Aug 2007 12:35 AM
I just got a FID card for long guns and I am under 21. I walked into a gun shop in New Jersey and tried to buy ammo for my .22 rimfire. The store clerk told me I needed to be 21 years old to buy that .22 rimfire ammo. When I asked why, the clerk told me that it was because the law prohibits sale of handgun ammo to persons under 21, since .22 rimfire ammo can be used in some handguns, I was not able to buy it. Is this really the law? Can I really own a .22 rifle but not buy ammo for it? What do I do?

I have heard this argument before at some dealers. I have also always wondered what the real law is. I used to have my sister who was 18 take me to the store to buy my 22 ammo when I was a kid. either its a bogus interpretation of the law or they changed it somewhere down the line. I would Buy it in PA if I were you.

Yes, unfortunately that is the law.  If it fits in a handgun you need to be 21 yoa.

Hmmm, wonder how that law is really written...  That would ban virtually ALL rifle ammunition to those under 21.

I remember buying Hollow Point .22's at Effingers many years ago on my way to Pennsy.

Since it was hollow point ammo, I had to show ID and they had to make a record in a special book for it.

You can add .410 shotgun to that as well:
