NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / Wildlife Management / Windsor Damn Hunting

I hear many people talking about the Windsor Damn Hunting area off of RT 130. Most ask why they are seeing few numbers of deer. Ill explain. My family has lived there since the 60's. That area was prime for a long time, until trashed by idiot hunters. My self and other land owners/hunter on the Windsor RD side of the Land got together and decided to make our hunting better. We have all put food plots, feeders, created bedding cover, trails and I have a pond on my property in an attempt to bring the deer over to our side. Its worked well, the Turkey followed. The entire RD is private property with the exception of a small parcel near the TurnPike, which has been purchased and will be posted this year. The few deer left on the public land are very scattered. If you wish to hunt them, my advice is to hunt field edges because its tough to find a good trail thats used frequently enough to ambush. Other than that, the deer are mostly on the private property. During gun season, you wont see anything, as they wonder to others private property to seek refuge. Id advise you to find another area. I do allow people that are UBNJ members to hunt my farm, but only a select few as I have put alot of time and moeny into bringing the public deer to my farm. Fishing in the lake is great. Crappies near stumps and bass in the border lillies are large !! Give it a shot.

Two years ago we hunted that with a group of five guys on a rainy day during 6day.  With five guys we started 5 bucks only got one but with only five guys there are alot of escape routes.  Its a good piece.  We always start deer there even during saturday during 6day.

You must be getting the few deer left on the public land driven towards you and your buddies. Even though we own most of the land on the other side, we venture over to the public land now and then to see whats popping. We dont hunt it though, thats just not right to do to others that rely on it for their hunting considering that we have private land to hunt. We see some deer over there, but most are now on private land. We really made a beautiful habitat. It just takes so much freakin time and labor to keep it prime. Be careful during gun season though, alot of idiots go out there, pull the plugs out of their shotguns and DONT WEAR ORANGE while they try to slaughter deer. You're kind of taking your life into your hands. We never go over there during gun season.

Not a concern, but I ALWAYS get asked for advice about that particualr area. Deer are there, but when I say idiot hunters ruined it, I mean it. They go out there and totaly trash it. I didnt mean to come across like an ass if thats what you're saying. I just figured Id do my best to answer the questions I get asked regularly.

Your def righ.  People who are asses such as cityslicker and other people that shouldnt be allowed to hunt do ruin it.  People like that should go back to where they came from.  People who respect the game and land like all of us on this site for the most part are the ones that deserve to hunt these types of wma.  And not have the fear of getting shot themselves.  Everyone else that litters and doesnt care about the proper care for land are the ones that need to kicked in the ass and they are ones that ruin it for all of us...  To tell you the truth the couple of times i have been there, i have not seen alot of hunters or other people

Yea, most people dont even bother with it anymore. It was ruined by the idiots. It kind of started to come back. Some of the locals still do hunt it though. But, they have little honey holes that can only be accessed by quads, deep in the woods. Since they live real close, they just ride the quads over. I know a guy who took a solid 11 pointer out of there 2 years ago. He is one of the guys that goes back on his quad. If it stays left alone for a few years and the moron gun drivers dont touch it. The deer will start to show themselve again. You can see a few deep in the fields late at night. Thats why I recommended hunting field edges. DONT LEAVE YOUR STANDS out there. They will be stolen. I even lock my stands to the tree on my property !

Whats wrong with deer drivers.  We go over their for one day a year and do the deer drives.  Especially during 6day on state wma the only way to get a buck is by pressuring him into making a mistake by getting up and running.  Let me guess are you one of those bow hunt for life guys.  Get rid of gun hunting and only bow hunting should be allowed...

No not at all. I slug and muzzleload hunt. Buckshot from time to time. I was commenting on the morals of most of the people I have experience with that hunted this particular land. I think any method in which a person(s) chooses to hunt is a good one. These guys just kind of abused the land and the animals. I participate in drives now and then. I will say, I am 99% bowhunter. I do appreciatte guns hunters that do things ethically and morally correct. No offense meant. My apologies

If you want to drive out the large ones though. Id probably say that Breshnahan Rd is your best bet. Right where it touches the turnpike. Thats where Ive seen the largest of deer over the years. Plus, most people dont venture that far down, they stay near the dam. Windsor RD wouldnt be a good idea because any land that is not yet posted, will lead you to private property and most of the land owners and farmers are not prosecuting any trespassers. They also kind of formed a make shift patrol with each other and the Fish and Game Officers that they allow to hunt their land. Just be careful, a gentleman was shot, although not badly, 2 or 3 years back by a hunter not wearing orange(the victim was not either).

Alright then glad we got that out of the way...Sorry on my part as well...It just pisses me off when some people say stop deer drives on public land and crap like that.  when really the deer clubs such as mine  have been hunting that same land for 50 years and have not said a lick to anybody about get rid of all of the guys that dont drive deer.

Yea, drives are a great way to get deer up and moving. I prefer the treestand and calling method, and all that is associatted with bowhunting. I do really enjoy drives when I participate in them. I think its a great way to get out with friends and have some fun, but I meant that about Breshnahan RD. Give it a shot if you havnt already. But, it gets thick and you WILL walk right up on deer.
