Anyone bring their kids lately? Do they still shoot at 5 clay birds? Do you have to break one???

You do not have to hit any, just handle the gun safely.  You will probably only shoot 2-3 times.

It's home study with 1 day (usually 1/2 day) on a range and on a field walk.  Then take tests.

When i took my shotgun 11years ago it was three days...Thursday night lecture,Friday lecture prepare for test, Saturday morning first thing 8Am took written test.  Then we split up in groups walked with the instructer through the woods and talked about ethics...Then we shot and while we were shooting, instructor called people aside to tell them how they did on the writing part of the test.  You shoot a couple of time the instructor tried to give you a wrong sized shell.  You went back to the classroom and they handed out the certificates and every one clapped and such.  I got my first shotgun two days later...

Here is the link for the Hunter Ed Class. You must register prior to showing up, and if they are under the age of 18, you must have the consent form when you go.
The weekend class's have been very busy with over 100 students, so don't delay if possible.

And yes, you don't have to hit the targets, just demonstrate safe handling of a firearm, and some knowledge of the weapon you either choose from their inventory or your own. He/She will shoot stationary clays on the ground first, with the option to shoot in the air later. If you bring a weapon make sure it's cased, unloaded and safety on. The instructors will inspect the firearm before shooting. Do not bring ammunition, they have it. The field course is mandatory for whatever dicipline you are taking.
ex. Shotgun-field course-exam.
My best advise is to not only practise safe handling at home or at the range, but to also use the home study guide. The test does have questions that are discussed in the book or CD, that one typically would not know. Particulary a young on.
Most kids are extremely nervous, but the instructors do a great job at relieving some of the stress.
It should be an educational day, but fun also.

Good luck.

My 12 year old took his test last year and he hit one out of 5 clay birds. What they are really interested in is how the gun is handled. Make sure that the kids use the safety, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and load and unload shells in a safe manner.

the last time i went, i took my buddy to get his shotgun license. they didnt have enough instructors, so i ended up throwing birds for people.

afterwards, i ended up going head to head with my buddy on clay birds. i outshot him 5 birds to 3.
