Fish are best frozen whole and damp, or bring it into my shop when you are done fishing. There really is not a lot to take care of a fish for mounting just some common sense, do not leave in the sun or out of water on the shore, keep it covered and damp. If it is going to be a skin mount do not drag it against a hard surface,

NOTE: There is a growing interest in catch-and-release fishing. Because of this Wildlife Taxidermy by Richard G. Santomauro is offering beautiful Reproduction Fish Mounts. All we need to know is a length and girth measurement and you can release your fish alive, for someone else to enjoy!

Here is the photo page from my web page for fish:

Great advice.  I've oftened wondered how best to preserve game that one would wanted mounted.  Another taxidermist several years ago provided the same advice you did when I asked him.  He simply said take a few measurements and some close-up pictures and then release.  Right thing to do.

You could also remind all the hunters here on how to best preserve and field-dress their deer for the upcoming season.  Some of us might need a refresher.

Thanks for your professional advice.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

And I see in another post you already provided this info.  Great!  Deer season cannot be too far off!

One of these years when I drop a good looking doe, I want a doe mounted to compliment my bucks.

Thanks Rich.  With any luck, I be bringing in a nice one or two next spring.  Not too many taxidermists who do fish up my way and fewer still who provide the quality you do.

No I do not. I don't know when the fish was caught or what care was given to it, therefore I would not eat it. It would be a crap shoot as to if I would get sick, NOT WORTH IT !!!

Rich, my buddy who has quite a few fish mounted, covers them in borax, wraps them and packs them in ice and brings them to the taxidermist. He say's it helps preserve them.

I cover them with salt and pepper, wrap them in bacon and pack them on the grill, they taste great. Only kidding but yes there are all kinds of ways to keep them till you can get them to your taxidermist. As long as they are wet or damp and frozen in a plastic bag they work out fine.
