true tracks do last a long time in the mud, but you can tell when they are freash. and how you can tell the diff b/t buck and doe, if you see a little dimple in the back of the print thats a buck. anyways he is scouting the area behind his house, so i will let you guys know what he does find.... best of luck. __________________ Michael

Take it for what it's worth, but I have hunted the Great Swamp since 1990. Good success in the 90s and great success until about 2003. Then the numbers shot way down. Seriously, I used to see at least 5 deer come thru my area 1-2 times a day, but the last few years...nothing. I see some bucks from time to time, but the number of does is way down!
It could be the ratio is where they want it or it could be the does are in deep and/or off the swamp property due to either hunting or pressure from the rutt or both. I do know that a high percentage of the deer move off the property and onto private property once they feel pressure on that first day. I started to piece some of the prior year's stats from the F&G website for Zone 38 earlier this spring going back to 2000. The trend was remarkable...every year it went downhill. For this year's hunt, the Swamp biologists sent a letter out with rule changes and confirmed the number of deer taken in 2006. Confirmed what my little statistical chart indicated and it is amazing how few deer are now being harvested. I decided to forego hunting this year in the Swamp and will instead focus on bow hunting until Thanksgiving. With that all said, if you do decide to hunt, you will surely have some nice bucks to shoot at should you harvest an antlerless deer. I saw some nice bucks last season in there, but not one doe. |

There is more on determining age and possible sex on this site, for example: http://www.pabucks.com/deer_signs.html Here is another writeup on tracks: http://www.brick.net/~deerhunt/magazine/sign.html This F&S article talks a little about track differentiation and tends to support the dewclaw theory: http://www.fieldandstream.com/fieldstream/hunting/article/0,13199 ... |
