I saw either a lone wood [no swearing please] or a snipe in the Rockaway River WMA during fall bow.  It was just about dark when the thing jumped up and scared the crap out of me as I was walking to my car.

I would also guess a woodcock.  I have shot 2 in the past and missed 1  I was talking to a guy I meet up with pheasant hunting, he said it was a good year for woodcock.  He and his brother shot 15 this year.

I have seen more wood [no swearing please] this year than ever.  My dogs have put up atleast a dozen... but then again, it wasn't all at once so maybe it's the same bird a dozen times.

There are alot in Cape May and CUmberland County. They are a lone woodlot bird that preys on worms and insects. There are few guide who guide specificly for wood [no swearing please] in this area. I jump several each year, and have shot them in the past. They don't eat as well as quail or dove. In the north they call them timberdoodle.

Till our trails cross,

I know a bunch of people that call them Timberdoodles! I like hunting them. There fun when you jump them. I usually only get out 1 day for them. The first day of the bunny season is usually the last day of the north zone timberdoodle season. The place I hunt has plenty of both! Makes for a great fun day! You don't know what to expect..a bird going up or a bunny zipping along the ground! Makes for a super fun hunt!

To be honest I think I see more wood [no swearing please] then wild quail each year. Man, thats bad. What I'd like to see the state do is let hunter volunteer to do habitat work on WMAs it our land they could just manage the work. I think this would improve the habitat and save money. I love hunting quail over my chocolate labs. My female labs first hunt was quail at Meadowview Shooting Preserve. I wish there was more wild quail. The state is finally doing some quail habit improvements in Cumberland county WMAs. I think they should do more in other areas. I myself do habitat work with my company. A chainsaw is the best friend to wildlife. A clear cut does wonders. Proud member of QDMA, Pheasants Forever, Quail Unlimited, OWAA, Whitetails Ins., National Trappers Assoc., NRA, NAHC, Delta Waterfowlers(1st and better then DU), Ducks Unlimited, American Rabbit Hound Assoc.,Isaic Walton League and just sent, joined NJSCF, SPORTSMAN CONGRESS, and NWTF. About $300 Per year in dues. cheap for what I get in info alone.

Till our trails cross,

WW

PS going out with chainsaw right now!!!

This is a late responce but some day I will show you a picture of a pair male and female I mounted. The way to tell the differance is the length of their bill. I forget which length is which though.

Woodcock(aka timberdoodles) are migratory from Sept-Nov. South Jersey near the Deleware Bay is supposed to be great for wood [no swearing please] especially in late Oct early Nov. Lots of guys hunt them in the Flatbrook area in Oct.

I tried to eat one once..tasted like liver.

Kris, Remember when we went goose hunting in Sept we saw more wood [no swearing please] than geese.

Hey Drag, if a wood [no swearing please] scares the crap out of you what's it like when a rooster flushes from under your feet?

Probably the closest to cardiac arrest you can get without actually dying.
