Why you going for that buck? Look att all those does!

well... tonight i finally got a shot at the real thick wide 8 with my pro hunter muzzleloader. hes the one i have been getting pictures of and this is the first time he has ever come into the stand during the light... i saw him coming from a distance and couldnt get my gun up right away because i had a buck right under my tree already stamping at me and real nervous. the wind switched and when the buck was about 90 yards out coming in he caught my wind because the wind switched.... the one under my tree bolted and he got real nervous. i rested the gun and waited for him to turn then squeezed the shot off which i was real confident with. i looked up to see him run off tail down hard. then my heart sunk when i looked 30 yards out to see a branch broken and swinging.  went and found no blood. the scope was clear because the branch was so close compared to the deer. sucks. i did everything right, been hunting this big 8 for a while and a branch screwed my success... gonna let this spot cool down for 2 weeks. misery... haha

here he is in case you were wondering which buck he was...

well, im gonna keep checking the trail cam everyday until he shows up in the light. until then whats the point...
Posted:  21 Dec 2007 10:53 PM
I sooooooooo feel your pain, but as parkerbows said, I wouldn't wait two weeks either.  Just because you don't get him on the trail cam, doesn't mean he hasn't come back to the area.  I missed a shot at one of four big boys a few weeks ago (shot a tree) in a spot that I have been baiting and had a trail cam on.  I never saw them on the trail cam, but there they were, four of them walking in a procession through the woods.  Give it a few days, then start waiting and watching.  Good luck getting him, he looks like a fantastic buck

let em rest , let the woods calm down and let him get over it. if you shot at him by the bait pile or your stand 9 times out of 10 he will associte that area with danger for awhile. i would give it a good week and a half 2 weeks and then start checking it out again. He looks to be a old mature deer. they are smart. Good luck .

thanks a lot everyone. tonight i saw the other big buck im hunting. http://www.newjerseyhunter.com/images/upload/jul07/633339370523023588.jpg

my buddy shot a doe at 150 yards in a different stand and got down at 445 since he already got a buck with muzzle loader. we went got his truck and came bak and the big boy was next to her. woulda been a hundred yard shot for me if i had brought my gun in his truck. left it in my truck. at least i know hes living in a spot i can hunt him now. from the stand woulda been a 150 yard shot wuth pro hunter

The big guys will hold there racks longer, good luck

Haven't seen anything, buck or doe, during the daylight in the past few weeks.

When they're nocturnal like this, are they more likely to show at dawn or dusk?

Did see some nice bear tracks tonight.
Posted:  23 Dec 2007 5:18 PM
well, the last buck i showed pictures of has been showing himself in the light only in early morning, 6-8am on the cam. other wise he has been nocturnal. the previous one that i hit the branch on had been showing himself in the afternoon in light and at night. i guess every deer is different, i would say now that rut is over its not really that woth hunting the morning since most of the big guys are back in bedding way before light.

Good luck They are moving at all times of the day You have to hunt the mornining dont give up Goota be in it to win it. With all this rain today the morning will be a  good hunt the deer will be moving

Posted:  27 Dec 2007 9:59 PM
lol honest to god, havent been getting either buck on the cams in the past week. the big farm buck i posted last on here i spotted tending a doe in this 2nd rut so that explains his story, the one i hit the branch on i havent gotten pics of... i got hundreds of pics of all the other deer hes been with but not him. starting to think i hit him..... the way he ran i swore i did but the branch said no haha. im gonna go look back there tomorrow where i stopped tracking

runumngunm, honest god, i woke up at 6 and thought. hes right, you "gotta be in it to win it" i threw my gear on and waited till just before light. went to my big farm which i have never attempted to hunt because i bump so many deer in the fields going in. so i get into the stand today where i overook my whole farm, didnt bump any goin in. around 730 i see a doe pop out in front at 200 and a buck stroll behind through some corn at 180. then i look to my right at 250 yards and glass two deer i see coming. one is a giant main frame 10 with junk all over and another is a big 8. i would guess the 8 to score 115 and the 10 with stickers to go easy 135-140's. they were rutting hard and ended up corralling 9 does that popped out to my right within 150 yards of me. i couldnt get a good rest so i decided not to take the shot. the does ended up leading the 2 bucks right back to where my deer come out every afternoon. they were all the same does i have been seeing everyday. tonight i hope to shoot him. he was the largest buck i have ever encountered in the tree. i think i caught him coming back to bed from the night since the moon was still up...

Almost dropped a 1/2 rack with my Chevy this evening in Long Valley... he would have been roadkill if I didn't drive like an old lady He was with a bunch of does and they were all crossing the road.

I'm heading back out tomorrow afternoon.  Property owner says the deer are coming in at dark or just after dark.  I'll let you know what I see when I am out there tomorrow afternoon.
