NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / How To / AM stand arrival??????
Posted:  11 Jul 2007 9:57 AM
I believe in the I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late theory, but others think that busting through the woods in the dark spooks game. I know I've spooked deer on the way in, but I've also had deer walk past me during "false light" when if I was walking in at that time I would not have seen. What time do you arrive on your morning stand, and what are your reasons?

atleast 1 hour before sun-up.  i want it to quiet down after i get setup so i go in early.  plus i want to get my spot.  i hunt state land and i don't want someone else in my spot so i make sure i'm in there early.  hell on opening day of six day i might get in 1.5 to 2 hours early.

Same here, I hunt mostly public land and I tend to get in about 1 to 1.5 hours early to let anything settle down if I did spook it. Also, as wojt. stated, I get thier early to get my spot, just on the outside chance someone is hunting the same area.

Same here.  Heck, sometimes I'll go earlier if I'm not sure of where I'll be setting up.  Finding a tree in a good location that has the type of cover for me and my climber has been known to take a bit of time before.

I'm in the school 1 hour before legal shooting time. So I'm up there an hour & a half before sunup.

Same.  At least 1 hour before sun-up which means I have 30 minutes to relax and settle in before the "half hour before sunrise" time when we can officially start hunting.  When I hunt the Great Swamp during shotgun season or a piece of private land at the start of shotgun season, I tend to arrive about 1.5 to 2.0 hours ahead of time...mostly because I am excited and can't wait!

There are times during the long bow season where I wake up a little later than expected and arrive to my stand just at first light or even after first light.  I have kicked up deer either way.  I have also climbed into my stand late and within 5 minutes of being in my stand I have shot a deer.  Go figure.

You should try different times to confuse the deer .Deer will patern you on the times you arrive and leave .You need to be in the stand when they are there . Sometimes I will be in the stand an hour before sunrise and other times I will wait until there is enough daylight to see if there is any deer near my stand as I approach it. Last year I walked to my stand one morning at 6:45 and 15 minutes later I harvested a buck. You have to try different things sometimes to get that deer!!!!

Yeah the bears tend to scare the piss out of me at least 2 or 3 times a year......a little unerving when you realize your only about 5 feet from a black glob in the dark.

Don't worry... corzine is spending $850,000 to educate them to leave you alone.

I like to get into my stand an hour before sunrise... gives me a half hour to get settled before legal shooting light.  On opening day though of six day, I get into my stand about 1.5 to 2 hours before sunrise... it may sound like overkill but if I'm in my stand when everyone else starts coming in, the deer will sometimes spook to me instead of me spooking them to someone else.

I'm usually in between 30-45 minutes before shooting light. I like to get in early and let the woods calm down. Especially if I'm using a climber in a new spot.

1 hour before sunrise for me

Depends on where the stand is. If it's near what I believe is a bucks bedding area, I get in 60 to 90 minutes before first light. If I'm hunting a funnel or pinch point, 30 minutes might be good enough, depending on what's nearby. If I'm hunting a field corner or edge, I'll wait for first light to avoid spooking deer in the field. I've had pretty good luck getting to the edge of a cornfield at first light and still hunting to my stand on the edge.

Ditto.

I "try" to pick my stands and routes so I wont be near deer till right around sunrise. I still booger  a few now and then.

I like 1.5 hrs before. The key is to go in slowly You have lots of time to get to your stand.

I still try to get in well before daylight like everyone else. I have to say though only a small percentage of the deer I shot over the years have been in the first hour of daylight. A much larger percentage have been at dusk.

The amount of time I'm in my stand before shooting time is inversely proportional to the damage my poor ass took getting to the stand the night before.  As the season wears on I wear out.

Except of course for the last day where superhuman effort powered by hoarded amphetamines gets me there early just one last time.

As long as its still dark I am good with that. Like Aftermath said on opening day of 6 day, I get up there alot earlier. If there are other people around I can see them coming in with there flashlights or atv's. Then I know where everyone is and also they can chase the deer over to my side of the area.
I like to be settled in my spot before any signs of the sun breaking the horizon.

Totally agree with Frank on this one!  I'd say 80% of my deer are taken at dusk.  I love hunting all day, but if I can't you better beleive that I rather be in there from 3ish-dusk rather than surnrise.
