All Monmouth county hunters and anyone who wants to hunt Monmouth County parks should attend this meeting. There were many anti hunting letters published in the Asbury Park Press and we need to address this issue in force.

Might be a good idea to post links or summarize the content of these letters so those that go are more prepared.

From the Asbury Park Press 6/1/07
A sample of the agenda

Most don't want park deer hunt

The Monmouth County freeholders have the power to overrule the Monmouth County Parks Department and stop the deer hunt. The department has announced they want to continue the deer hunt from September 2007 through February 2008 and want to expand the hunt to more locations.

The total cost of the hunting is the burden of the county taxpayers. Every survey taken clearly shows the vast majority of county residents oppose hunting in the parks. Less than 1 percent of the county population is hunting on county park property.

The freeholders are elected to their positions by the registered voters. It is the freeholders' responsibility to reflect the voter majority and exert their power and stop the county park deer hunt. It is the responsibility of the registered voters to vote accordingly in the next election.

lets give them a good showing this time, even if you are going to hunt there.

June 11 is fast approaching. The meeting as was posted is at 7:00 PM.

Please we need as many people in attendance as we can get. The Anti's have it all together on this one. A letter campaign. They have even got the neighbor hoods and the sorrounding cities to jump in against the Park hunt.

We must show them that we are together forever, and that we are going to fight them everywere and anywere.

We all have three minutes to speak. It is open to the public. Write it down. Put it on paper. Make sure we all use our three minutes. We "CAN NOT" let them put us down. The Mommouth Park System needs our help and we can't let them down. Even if you speak about Coyotes, which are also making their presence in the Homdel and Marlboro area.

We are all counting on all the hunters of the state. Makes no different if you are going to hunt in Mommouth county or not.

We need more vocal support at mondays meeting.

County to vote on expanding deer hunt

Critics: Officials haven't shown need

IF YOU GO

The Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners is scheduled to hold Monday a public hearing and final vote on revising the existing deer-hunting program.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Tatum Park's Red Hill Activity Center, Middletown.

A deer-hunting program that calls for opening several new hunting sites in Monmouth County this fall is expected to be approved by the county Park System commissioners at their meeting Monday.

The program has its critics. Residents who attended previous Park System and Board of Freeholder meetings said the deer management program report does not justify deer hunts at county parks.

Park System spokeswoman Laura Kirkpatrick said the primary concern from deer overabundance is ecological damage. For instance, Kirkpatrick said, deer consume ground cover and shrubs, affecting birds and other animals that rely on the vegetation.

"We are doing this (deer management program) for the forest health of the Monmouth County parklands," Kirkpatrick said. "Deer can have a significant negative impact on the abundance, growth, regeneration and diversity of 700 to 800 native plant and animal species."

But Freehold Township resident Doris Lin told the freeholders at their May 24 meeting in Wall that the hunt "is cruel to the deer and has not been scientifically justified."

"In the newly proposed hunt areas, the Park System has never conducted deer populations studies," Lin added.

New hunting sites are proposed for parks in Marlboro, Middletown, Millstone Township, Roosevelt and Holmdel.

The Park System's Board of Recreation Commissioners has the statutory power to enact the deer hunt without input from the freeholders, who oversee county government.

"As a freeholder board, we listened very carefully to what residents told us but have not formally communicated a position to the parks' commissioners," Freeholder Anna C. Little said last week.

At the same meeting Lin attended, Wall resident Gary Faraci told the freeholders the hunt is part of an "unneeded, unwanted program."

He said deer-population statistics from the Park System are either lacking or incomplete, or offer weak evidence that a hunt is needed.

"No count has ever been done in (an area opened for hunting last year) or two areas to be added this next hunt," Faraci said.

Kirkpatrick said the Park System has compiled data from spotlight deer surveys — a methodology not considered scientifically valid but commonly used by conservation officials — and aerial surveys that take place when there is snow cover.

Faraci at other meetings had said the deer management program report lacks statistics of car accidents involving deer, the numbers of residents who contract Lyme disease, and a cost of any ecological damage caused by deer.

Park officials said the program has a long-term goal of reducing deer populations to a maximum of 10 per square mile. The report suggests the density is now higher than that.

In addition to the new areas, the deer management plan proposes using 11 areas also used last season for hunting: Charleston Springs Golf Course, Crosswicks Creek Greenway, Howell Park Golf Course, Manasquan Reservoir Bear Swamp Tract, Shark River Park, Tatum Park, Turkey Swamp Park, Yellow Brook Tract, Clayton Park, Hartshorne Woods Park and Thompson Park.
