NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / How To / New hunter in New Jersey

I just recently moved to New Jersey. I live off exit 12 on I-78 and was wondering what zone I am in for deer season. Also all what I have to do to get my NJ hunting license and how to register my guns in the state I got my last years license from Connecticut and I dont have a NJ drivers license yet but I have proof of residency. I will need to get all this sorted out in a couple weeks or so. Any info would be highly appriciated.

You have to have been a resident for six months, before you can get a license. Your license from another state, I believe is good, or you'll have to take a safety course.

I'm not familiar with what zone your in. I believe you don't have to register your guns, but I'd check that out, with your local P.D.

Check withy them also, about applying for you NJ FID card. Good Luck.

If you are located on the southern side of rt 78 you are in deer zone 10 is you are on the northern side it is deer zone 7. Both zones fall under regulation set #8. good luck in the up coming season i hunt zone 10 myself all private property though.

You don't have to regester the guns.Although I am not sure how it works with hand guns. You should go to your local PD and get an FID. Legally you only need it to purchase another gun, however it can be a hassle when transporting a gun if you don't have it. Some  police officers are not familiar with firearms laws. As a result if you get pulled over with out the FID it might create a problem.

call the Northern F&G office for hunting lic info & the state police about your guns to get the "correct information". All you will get here is opinions mixed with the information. it's always better to go to the office that regulate the activity.

230Grain is Correct.  In NJ firearms registration is voluntary.  But NEVER, EVER, EVER register your firearms with anyone.  Ever.

Go to a local sporting goods store, one that specialises in Hunting and fishing will be the best. There you will need to pick up a compendium which will have all the zones, rules and regs. You should also be able to pick up the DVD and test book to take you test for a license. I think if you have a license in another state you may not have to take a test but you may want to double check that to be sure.

Good luck and welcome to the crappy state of NJ

Your out of state hunting license will satisfy the hunting education requirement in NJ, as long as the license indicates you were a resident hunter in your former state. Simply take the out of state license, and proof of NJ residency to your local sport shop, and they should issue you an NJ resident license with no hassel.

You may have a problem where the license is not weapon specific. I know in Florida, they simply issue you a hunting license, and the type of weapon you use is up to you-(you simply purchase a weapon specific stamp for another $5.00 per weapon type). So getting a New Jersey archery or muzzleloader license with a foreign license that is not weapon specific may present problems-and frankly, whether they give you the license is at the discretion of the guy behind the counter.
