Do you have to have any proof of purchase for your guns? I don't know what happened to all my receipts that I had.

I wonder that same thing since I had a total loss house fire back in the 90's and lost all paperwork. I think a certificate of eligibility should suffice if you have any of those. This is NJ so who knows what they can interprit as legitamit ownership. Other states just run the serial #'s in some cases to see if the gun comes up as stolen, if there is no dispute you're fine. When I traded several guns in , they made me sign a form stating that I was the owner of the guns to be traded in.I photo-inventoried all my firearms and catalogued the serial #' just in case of fire or theft, I can identify them as mine.

No.  But it's a good idea.

I've heard horror stories from people who have had thier firearm confiscated by police ,either while settling a domestic dispute or while clarifying a permit issue and only to show up to reclaim thier firearm and the department told them they need to show  positive proof of ownership to have it returned. Look what happened in new orleans during katrina, the city confiscated as many LEGALLY OWNED firearms as they could from residents ,WITHOUT issuing receipts.  Now they have a legal nightmare on there hands figuring out who the rightful owners are .
