APP article below published May 12,2007 fails to mention that that anti hunting group was outnumbered at least 4 to 1 . The writer didn't report on the May 12, meeting where no one opposed the hunt and members of the Federation,UBNJ and local residents supported the program.

FREEHOLD — Monmouth County's Deer Management Program — which calls for opening several new hunting sites later this year — is based on incomplete information and should be scrapped, a resident told the Board of Freeholders on Thursday.

Gary Faraci of Wall said the report lacks reliable annual counts of deer, a summary of car accidents involving deer, the number of residents who contract Lyme disease, and a cost of any ecological damage caused by deer — all of which are cited as reasons for continuing deer hunts at some county parks.

"We haven't been given any data to show the hunt is needed," Faraci said during the freeholders' meeting.

The county park system will hold its second and final public information session on the deer program today at the Charleston Springs Golf Course Golf Center, 101 Route 527, in Millstone Township. Plans and maps will be available for inspection beginning at 8:30 a.m. The formal meeting will begin at 9 a.m. A previous meeting was held in Middletown.

Faraci said he has examined the Deer Management Program report and spent five hours looking at other park system records, and found no evidence the residents benefit from annual deer hunts.

"There's no record of deer counts since 2005 so there's no way we know its effectiveness," Faraci said.

Bruce A. Gollnick, assistant director of the Monmouth County Park System, said on Friday that staff members compiled the Deer Management Program report.

Officials have not been able to get a precise deer count because of the animals' "mobility," Gollnick said, and because deer spend much of their time under cover and cannot be counted or seen.

However, counts by helicopter at times of snow cover and spotlight counts have helped gather some information about the size of the deer population, Gollnick said.

Gollnick said staffers have been unable to obtain exact statistics of motor-vehicle accidents involving deer or establish the relationship between a reduction in deer and decreases of Lyme incidences.

Gollnick said the program has a long-term goal of reducing deer populations to a maximum of 10 per square mile.

The report suggests the density is now higher than that.

The deer management plan proposes using 11 areas that also were used last season for hunting: Charleston Springs Golf Course, Crosswicks Creek Greenway, Howell Park Golf Course, Manasquan Reservoir Bear Swamp Tract, Shark River Park, Tatum Park, Turkey Swamp Park, Yellow Brook Tract, Clayton Park, Hartshorne Woods Park and Thompson Park.

New hunting sites include parks in Marlboro, Middletown, Millstone Township, Roosevelt and Holmdel.

Jerry, with this missing data, wouldn't you say this report is incomplete, as well?  Sounds like it to me.  Kathy

Did you expect anything else from the liberal press. It seems all the hippies from the '60's have become reporters, editors and Democrat polititcians.

You are definitely correct.  But because they were claiming the data was incomplete--I was using their word

"I seen this one coming"
Even though I did High School and the Military through the 60's never did the drug thing. I was always opposed to it and continue to do so, not like some others I read about on this site.

This is the e-mail address fro the author of the piece.

Perhaps he needs to be enlightened with some facts.

Dear Asbury Park Press,

Thank you for many years of dishonest journalism and biased reporting. In recent years you have become very good at it - I'm sure the folks at Pravda would be proud...

Since it has come to my attention that only one person spoke against the park system deer management hunt, you failed to mention that several other people were in favor of the hunt.

The title of your article is misleading. (As if I expected different)...

When one reads "COMES UNDER FIRE" we anticipate a barrage of negative criticism not from one source, but from many.

Truth be told (and believe me, this is not a stretch), more than one person and as many as seven applauded the efforts of the park system deer management plan.

Taxpayer's are saving thousands of dollars through this plan. Hunters are sharing the meat of the harvest with those less fortunate. Local businesses are also reaping the benefits of the hunters' presence.

But your article would never let on to a scyntilla of truth.

Thank God for the Internet (sorry I mentioned God, I'm sure you'll find that offensive) !

Keep up the good work! We may yet still need a newspaper to wrap our fish, kindle our fires and to polish our shoes on.

Sincerely - Me.
