NJ Hunter / New Jersey Politics & Guns / Political Action, Tools, and Information / Why it's important for all NJ Hunters to oppose and defeat .50 ban
Posted:  11 May 2007 9:06 AM
I hope most hunters and shooters see the pending bill for what it is: a gun grab.

The bill:

A3998 - Sponsored by Assemblymen Reed Gusciora (D-15), Michael Panter (D-12), and Robert Gordon (D-38), would ban the possession of all .50 BMG rifles and ammunition by declaring such items to be a “destructive device.”  It also would prohibit the private ownership of all .50 caliber in-line muzzleloader rifles, or any antique muzzleloader over .60 caliber.

If NJ shooters "snooze" on this one, the ripple effect extends beyond the banned caliber and fire-arms.

Here's the rub:

The existing NJ Hunting laws prohibit the use of shotgun and ML calibers smaller than .50 for hunting deer. The biggest gauge we can currently use is a 10.

The argument could be made that the muzzleoader can utilize a sub-.50 caliber sabot slug, however the firearm by design has .50 (or greater diameter).

The pending bill opens Pandora's Box for NJ Hunters.

If the bill is successful, what would prevent the future banning of shotguns - regardless of load - be it slug or shot?

Our legislators are mostly lawyers and craft legislation that throws math out the window.
How convenient...

Gauge to Caliber Conversion (excluding over-bore)

10 ga. = .775 cal

12 ga. = .729

16 ga. = .663

20 ga. = .615

28 ga. = .550

There you have it.

Bird hunters, deer hunters, sport shooters:

This is our warning.

The potential gun grab goes further.

It would effectively ban Dangerous Game calibers.

This bill should unite all hunters, shooters and collectors, from all economic strata.

You say you don't own a Holland & Holland .500?
You have no need for a DG rifle?
Only rich guys own DG rifles?
You'll never hunt with a big caliber (even though thats all we use in NJ)...

This bill would prevent you from even seeing one in NJ.

If this bill is defeated, as it should be, chances are the legislative urge to ban will not go away.

Send these guys some letters.

They'll get voted out.

The NJ Dems have lost touch with their rural constituents.

I sent those guys and pretty much every member of the legislature calm and carefully constructed emails and I hope everyone else can do the same.

This proposed law is a travesty!
