NJ Hunter / New Jersey Politics & Guns / NJ Firearms ID Card / Applied for FID and permits this afternoon.

Well, with a slight hiccup I finally applied for my FID and permits this afternoon.  The hiccup was that the PD doesn't take cash (anymore) for the permits so they asked me to come back in the evening to do the whole process, even though I live about a mile from the station and could have run home and gotten a check.  I went back a few hours later and the Lt. was in the lot waiting for another patrolman to come in to print me.  The Lt. apologized for making me leave and come back, but he said they are very busy around the time I was there and that it's better to come at night.  What surprised me was they didn't really know what print forms they needed and said they don't get hardly any applications at all.  There's a range that's a stones throw away from the PD.  They were really nice though so I didn't press my luck by asking how long it would take.  They took all the forms and said if there was anything else they needed the clerk would give me a call.  Overall it was easier than I thought, you just have to work with the PD.

You should have asked ... just so you have a time frame to see if things are going ok. While you get a jerk once in a while, the vast majority of cops are nice guys just doing their jobs.

The gun laws we have in NJ sure do make you feel like a criminal or something when you apply. All the paperwork, the background checks, the printing .... just to buy a stupid deer gun. Or, even a BB gun!

The time will past soon, and you'll have your permits. What are you thinking of buying with them? Going by your name, I'll assume a 1911 pistol? All red blooded Americans should have a made-in-America .45 1911!

OldCoot,

You were right, but when you call and the clerk doesn't know what to tell you, it's not much help.  She only told me today that they stopped taking cash.  Apparently people were walking away with it.  She kept asking me if I "got the instructions."  I didn't know what she was talking about.  The original conversation went something like, "Uh, lets see, I know you need a MO for $54, then $5 for the card but so and so won't be back until next week and she usually does this, oh and the mental health form..."  you get the idea.  I think the Lt. said it best when he told me they don't do many FID applications.  That explains a lot.

As for what I'm going to buy, I'm thinking of a Kimber, Stainless II .45 or Pro Carry HD II .45, something all steel.  The wife said she'd like to learn to shoot so I think maybe a .22 pistol for her to start, but I'm also looking into 9mm 1911's.

WooHoo!  I just got the call today that my FID and permits are ready.  Except for having to be reprinted in mid June because of some smudged prints, the whole process took about three months.  I called once in August to check how everything was going and the clerk told me they were waiting for one set of prints still.  All in all the PD and clerks were very professional about the whole process.
