We got the application on 4/12/07 and it was issued today, 5/09/07.

Not bad considering we had to wait on a piece of paper again to complete it.

Another great example that it can be done in a timely manner.  All PD's should be like yours.

I agree and some are just a PIA to deal with.  I also think we are just in a time period where the SP and FBI info is coming back fairly quick.  What ever the reason, I'm glad we can get them done quickly for the people that are applying.

Each time I had to change address from original. 1st time Independence twp 7 months second move was done by state police 4 months. Independence had application 4 months and when I went in to check on it it was still in drawer, never touched. Then 3 months on that checking in from time to time.

How soon after a change of address does someone need to get their FID card updated? When they get the address on their drivers liscense changed? Or right when they move into the new address?

I would say, as soon as possible.

It's better to have all conforming identification in the event you need to present it.

Any way you could be a helluva guy and take care of our address changes and handgun purchase permits?

(I think I hear TJC laughing his ass off at me)

There actually is a law on how much time you have to change your address.  It's something like 30 days.  I don't think I've ever heard of it being enforced.

Basically, the day your address on your drivers license changes is the day your NJ FPID becomes worthless.

Well since you have 7 days to notify MVC, formerly DMV, of your address change for you DL, and, your DL and NJFID now have to have the same address, I'd say you have 7 days IF you want to buy a gun shortly after moving.

Honestly I don't know what if any is the exact time you have to change the address.  I don't recall seeing any time period in the regulation book we have for issuing the cards.  But that isn't the actual law, it's a guide for the issuance.

But as noted, all of your ID's have to match now or they won't sell the gun.

You want to see a royal PIA, you should see the problems we have with PO Boxes.  The people have a PO Box on their DL for mail delivery, it's the only address they can use or they won't get their mail because there is no home delivery in their area.
We process the NJFID card and put their actual address on it as we are suppose to.  They don't match.  Problem.
So we have been putting both the PO Box with actual address on the card without issue so far.
The problem arises because they live in a Twp but their address shows they live in a section of that Twp.
Very confusing and big PIA.

If I could I would.  I can't even issue my officers permits because they don't live in town.

I just went through this and bought two guns with this FID stuff and COA.

I would put the paperwork in ASAP because it takes awhile and you don't want to be waiting for it when you need it.

For practical purposes, you don't need to change the address on your FID until you get an entirely new DL (when it expires).  When you change your address on a non-expired DL, DMV gives you a sticker you place on the back with your new address.  Your old address is still on the front.

When you go to buy a firearm, the front of your license still has your old address which matches your FID.  This is important and is the part the FFL needs to check.

Now, when you fill out your background check paperwork it will ask for your address.  Putting your old address would not be accurate.  Here you put your new address.  If the FFL asks, just show him the DMV sticker on the back of your DL that will match.

You are all set.  But like I said, took me 2 months to get the COA for the FID, so don't wait.

TJC...I wish I could afford to move to your town. I am moving the Bloomingdale...Keahunter said they are reasonable.

What do you think about getting a lawyer to expidite things or would a "liar for hire" just make things worse?

Hi all, awesome boards a lot of good info I'm glad I found it!

I saw a few threads on this topic and am curious why an old address is being deemed as non-valid.  The law indicates the FID expires only upon disability and handgun permits are valid for 90 days.  I did see the 30 day address change section but it only says to change within that time period, it doesnt say the card expires at that point.
