NJ Hunter / New Jersey Small Game & Waterfowl Hunting / Small Game Action / stupid idea: small game contest
Posted:  24 Sep 2005 5:47 PM
i know everyone is having fun with the deer hunting contest but maybe if anyone was interested, we can have a small game contest (pretty stupid idea but if anyone wants to, tell me). we can different amounts of points for various small game animals. i would understand if nobody wanted to but its just a thought. i would just like to get involved in a contest since i dont deer hunt.

small game hunters, can you please give me your opinions. even big game hunters can give their 2 cents.

Hey I'd be down for a contest like that. I don't bowhunt (yet) so a small game contest sounds like a great idea. How would you wanna set it up?

I don't know about small game but a spring turkey contest would be a great idea!!!

jex99in00, id set it up into teams just like the deer hunting contest. my idea for scoring would be

male pheasant- x points
female pheasant- x points
rabbit- x points
quail- x points

or at least something like that...the scoring would have to be decided among us but i think if enough people wanted to, id definetly work on it!

What about squirrels? Ya gotta give points for tree rats, lol.
Posted:  24 Sep 2005 9:31 PM
lol...i forgot about them. the only problem would be that their season is earlier then all the rest. i was also thinking about grouse but their are like none left in nj.

just srart the squirrel points when the rest of small game starts up

HOW ABOUT DUCKS

I don't think ducks are small game.  They would be considered waterfowl.  There's another contest for waterfowlers.

dont discredit yourself for being young!

I'm sure your capable of constructing a pretty darn good framework for a contest like this.. And everyone here would be willing to contribute to shape your framework into a good contest.

I'm going to assume each animal would be worth "x" amount of points depending on species? I dont know how we would accumulate points, number of animals probably is not the best way.. but squirrels and pheasants dont have points (as in antler points) to count

Ok, well....each animal should have a point value. Should it be based on based difficulty? Should we make teams? A few of my friends and I ran a contest among ourselves last year and the scoring system went something like this:
squirrel/woodchuck= 1pt.
grouse/woodcock=2pts.
pheasant=3pts.
That was how we did it, we can adjust it accordingly if anyone has input. Let me know.
Posted:  25 Sep 2005 10:29 PM
that scoring looks good to me jex. but you forgot about rabbit. i think rabbit should = 3points.lets see if we can see who wants to join then we can split into teams.
Posted:  25 Sep 2005 10:31 PM
How should we verify the scoring? Should we do digital pics like the deer contest, or just go on the honor system?
Posted:  25 Sep 2005 10:34 PM
people who shoot something should post them on the site....we know how stories turn into somehting different then when they started.

Ok, so every time you have a successful hunt you should post your results on the site here? Also, when should we officially start? Squirrel season started already, so should we start soon or wait until Pheasant season starts?
Posted:  25 Sep 2005 10:46 PM
yea...just post them on a thread.
Posted:  25 Sep 2005 10:59 PM
Ok, that works for me...how about a start date?
