its part of the D&R canal state park system. its a big 800 acre piece thats got trails and is open to horseback riding. unfortunately its only open for deer during the bow seasons, otherwise id hunt everything there haha.  its by blackwells mills/ south middlebush.  im not sure if its somerset or middlesex.  I think its also an EAB area, but i dnt know too much about that program, or if you need a special permit to hunt it.  i guess if it was open to shotgun it would be overrun with hunters...looks like i should get my bow license haha

In the past you did not need a special permit. But, you were required to register your vehicle with the park office.
It is open to bow hunting only and I have seen a few nice deer in the area.

I never registered my vehicle or bought any permit. I mailed them a letter asking all that. They just gave me a map with the hunting areas marked off. most of the areas they let you hunt in are overgrown fields except by the canal entrance where there are some nice timbers. So basicly you can just park and hunt. no paperwork unless you feel like registering your vehicle with the park rangers. Because from what I've been told that's what they make you do. Unfortunately it's bow only, but every 2 steps you'll squash a shotgun shell so you know they go out there banging off buckshot. I've seen 3 bears out there in the last 4 years. it gets really crowded on the canal/park office entrance, so try a more remote area off corteleyous or middlebush. I hardly see anyone comming out with a deer, so the population grows more every year. lots of good deer out there if you do your homework.

cj, I've been hunting 6-mile for about 6yrs now. You do have alot of hunters in there. Alot of mountain bikers and some anti's. You don't need a permit, reg. your car. You can park in the gravel lot off of rt27 by the soccer feilds. Theres alot more deer taken out of there then people think. If you want the bigger boy's. you will have to pack it in. I do. I have 4 tree stand sites and 2 blind sites. Good luck.

I have just started poking around in there, it is about 15 minutes from my house, so I am thinking it might not be a bad place to try during the week after work.

I have seen quite a few doe, but no antlers yet.

Question....  can you build stands in there or is it portable only?  Id rather spend $20 at Home Depot then $150 at Dicks.

jkurilla,
I've been hunting it for years. It's state land. Take in and take out. Cant leave it or build it.

Here is a quick map I made with some Data from the State.

I am going to try and outline the hunting Zone from their paper map......

If you want this in a large PDF PM me an email address and I can send it to you.

Lots of deer....difficult place to hunt. Not many spots for a treestand...better off stalking around or in a ground blind.

Yup I use a ground blind. Problem is when the season changes. Blind's only one camo type(maybe good for fall) but when the snow comes rolling in, the blind sticks out like a sore thumb

gkurilla,

That's a nice map. When you outline the hunting areas in your map don't forget to include the small area off Middlebush. I'm not sure how you're working it all out but from the pix above I didn't see a boundary around it. Just checkin

Yeah I have to get to work on it...I havent outlined anything yet.  I used to do a lot of mapping in my old job, so I still have all the software and downloaded the photography from the state.  It is actually better then you will find on Google or any free service......
