Drag, how big was the bear? Any ear tags?
Posted:  21 Sep 2005 9:30 AM
About 200 #'s

Didnt see any ear tags or collar or anything.

I love seeing bears, they are so cool. Thats the third one Ive seen in there. One was about 350#'s, came right under my tree. I jumped the other one in the powerline thicket, it looked to be about 100#'s.

That would of been a sight to see....see you both sceaming and running thru the woods, wonder if the bear would be laughing also as long as you both come home safe thats what counts
Posted:  21 Sep 2005 10:12 AM
I wanted the bear to come closer so I was calling to him with my mouth, I think he was kind of interested, but he spotted us.

Ive called them in up in Montague with those noises. I always hear them "talking" up there. He wasnt that big so I was thinking of chasing after him too, but I think Kris thought I was already crazy when I started making the bear noises.

Could you imagine the headlines?:

"Hunter chases bear for a half mile, bear collapses in front of den and calls the NJDFW."

Matty, you know as well as I there are no bears in MONTAGUE
Posted:  21 Sep 2005 10:20 AM
Oh yeah, I forgot. My bad, there arent any bears in Northern NJ anymore. The F&W moved them all down south. I keep forgetting that.

All I saw were 2 does about 90 yards away.  Thought they would come right up the 4 wheeler path, but the didn't.  Later I found out the the path wasn't clear.  Someone cut down about 8 trees and they were laying across the path.  Oh well.
Woj, how long has the Arch Street bridge been out.  That is how I get to the property I hunt.  I ended up having to go to Hoffman Crossing Road and then cut along Ken Lockwood Gorge.  Now that is fun to do in the dark.  Fortunately I found an easier way back to 513.

Well, I must say, I will never make fun of Matty again.   We went out again tonight, and we both connected on does, but Matty is one hell of a shot.  It is probably one of the best shot I will ever see.  I have pics, so they will be up soon.  My story on the other hand isnt that great, it was a bad shot, but I ended up RUNNING after her cause I took out both back legs.  So I ran her down threw another arrow in her, Double lung, and she ran a few yards a laid down.  I came up on her and she was still alive.  I didnt have my knife, it was in my hip pack by my stand.  So I didnt want to put another arrow inher, so I drug her out still alive back to where Matty was finishing gutting his doe.  I went over to my stand took it off the tree and got my gear together and went over to where I put the doe.  She wasnt there!!!  After all this deer went thru it was STILL ALIVE.  It ran about 15 yards, AND I FINALLY cut its throat.  I have to say, I have been hunting for about 15 years, and the look this deer gave me when I shined the light on its head, is enough to make a soft hunter give up on hunting!!!!  It was hard for me, all I could picture all the way home was that deer.

Thats rough.
I had a buddy shoot one once and it dropped like a rock.    He filled out his tag and brought his stuff to his truck.  When he got back it has run off.  Never found it.
By the way.  Matty, when are you going to put me on some deer?  You know I am still trying to get my first bow kill.

I put Matty on this deer!!!  Put him in my spot, and we sat about 40 yards from one another!!!

Ian, dont worry about it man. It sucks, but its the way it goes. Your doe was the devil man, she wouldnt die! When she got up and almost ran me over, I had to check my pants.

I was gonna finish her for you, but I only had that pocket knife. Like I said though, no worries, nature is even more cruel when they starve or get taken down by a bear or yotes!

Mike, I'll put you on deer when I get a chance. I have to work tomorrow and Friday, but once I get to my favorite spot in chester, and figure out where the deer have moved to since they cut, I will take you out. I didnt forget. No guarantees though. Just a good chance!

Thanks again for bringing me to the spot Ian. I dont normaly hunt with people very often, usually go alone, but this year's been a lot of fun with you and Kris, and hopefully a few other guys! Only thing is, its making it tough for me to keep tabs on my own spots. But FUN nevertheless!
