Today I was fingerprinted and filed my FID application. Now we'll see how long it takes.
I had a nice chat with the police office who fingerprinted me. My references are the town's mayor and an ROTC officer at Princeton University who was a former student, so finding the references shouldn't be too difficult. The officer who fingerprinted me told me it would take two months. We'll see. I am not in the market to buy anything, but need the FID in order to join a gun club. I bought lots of stuff back in the 60's and 70s when the dollar was high relative to the peseta, lire and Deutchmark. |

fin, stay on it. Call your references in a week or two and see if they received and returned the letters. If not, call the PD and ask why. Once they have sent in the letters wait another 10 days and call the PD to check the status. If they blame any delay on "the FBI" or background check ask them exactly what date they sent the info to them.
Many towns can turn it around in or about the 30 day deadline. Any who don't should be pressured to do the right thing and obey the law. Good Luck. __________________ "To be unarmed and therefore helpless in the face of evil is irresponsible and in fact complicit to said evil. We could have a pool to bet on whether I get my FID first or bestgs get his first. It would be like watching a snail race.
Since the mayor is one of my references, if it takes a long time, I will get him to inquire about it with the police department. The mayor went to the same university as my wife and they are both active in the alumni association of a very elite university. |

| No They didn't ask for ref. The officer that handles it said it should take 4 day for fax transactions and then being that I haven't purchased in over 20 yrs that I need to pay an $18 fee for a SP background ck. I guess when you live in a small town w/6 cops it's gonna take time. Hell, they don't have a disp. Just an answering service!! | ||

Kearny is funny. you can be the pope and they will refuse you. I had to threaten a law suite. that got it done. And it still took ten years. __________________ Hunt with a Vizsla, Cause life's to short to hunt with an ugly dog!

Only way you will win a law suit is IF, you can prove some sort of negligence on their part. There is case law overriding the statue which deals with the investigation needing to be complete BEFORE anything can be issued. That refers to Pistol Permit or FID. __________________ "A bad day of hunting is better than a good day of work"

I just found out that the policies in my township require the reference letters to be supplied by the applicant at the time of the application. The police department does not send them out. I also found out that the police department does not notify the applicant when the application is approved, but that the applicant should check with the department after 8 to 12 weeks.
I asked about the application procedure for the town, but neither the dispatcher nor the fingerprinter knew anything about these rules. My advice is - get the rules from the chief of police before you apply. I think I just wasted three weeks of waiting. |

You are getting the run around. __________________ "To be unarmed and therefore helpless in the face of evil is irresponsible and in fact complicit to said evil. Wonder how long it'll take for a handgun permit in your town?
The wait sucks, but now that you got it - what are you looking to purchase? __________________ "...but to protest against all hunting of game is a sign of softness of head, not soundness of heart."

So you are saying that your town's own policies are setup to purposely break state law Why not Mt Olive does. They have there own form they add to the state form. It asks you what kind of gun you are buying and what you are going to do with it. Guy from State police said it was illegal form. He also said they weren't going to do anything about it... Nice form, as if you were going to put 25 ak-47's for purpose of terrorism in the space provided./ What a bunch of idiots.... __________________ "from my cold dead hands"

If I buy anything it will be a Krieghoff Trap Special combo. They are $14,000-$16,000, so I am going to be very sure before I buy one. |

Any who don't should be pressured to do the right thing and obey the law. Good Luck. I know we'll disagree, but this is BAD advice. The last thing you want to do it become annoying to the issuing agency. I've said it before and will say it again, the 30 day rule is not enforceable as per Case Law in NJ. The dept. has until the invesitgation is completed, completed, to issue the card. The PD does not need you nor do they want you calling every 10 days. Look at it this way, maybe your PD will be like ours and do it in a timely manor. You then come in next year to get a Pistol Permit and they do what needs to be done and you have it in say 2 weeks. Now, you keep calling and annoying them like suggested and you will eventually get the card. Now you come in for that pistol permit. Do you really think it will get done in the 2 week period? NOT. They'll make it a lessor concern for sure. Don't annoy, give them the time to get it done. Check with your references to confirm the letters. I can give you a dozen reasons why they may not have the letters in a week or so. Patience Grasshopper. __________________ "A bad day of hunting is better than a good day of work"
