NJ Hunter / New Jersey Politics & Guns / NJ Firearms ID Card / FID Address Change
Posted:  12 Mar 2007 9:39 AM
Now for a address change I need two references WTH. I moved within the same town. The last address change took over three months, and it looks like this one will take longer.
On February 28 I handed in the paper work was told that the references would get the letter in 2 days, one(my girlfriends)got it in 8 days, I'm ok with that. The other one has not received it yet.
When my girlfriend looks at the letter my address is WRONG, so she makes a note that the address is wrong.BTW we live together. She mailed it Thursday.
I called today to addvise them about the wrong address and was told that sometimes a previous address comes up, I tell him that I never lived there, he says he'll take care of it.
I also advise him that the other references has not received it yet and he says he knows, It came back because of wrong address and that he'll take care of it.
Why do I need 2 references letters when all I need is a address change?
I STILL LIVE IN THE SAME TOWN!!

You didn't fill out form STS - 003 Application for Duplicate Card?

You filled out a regular application form?

When my wife did her name change, she did the STS 3, and it asks for no references.

Maybe things have changed, or I'm wrong.

Would that also apply if orig FID was gotten in 1980?

She got her original about 1985. She did the name change in 1988. And then she did an address change in 2001. The only time she needed references was for the original.

Here is the current form ....

Who knows. Its a crazy state.

I moved within the same town 2 years ago and didn't have to change my ID card. The cops told me that the town dictates the card, not the actual address. I even tested it last year when I bought a new shotgun at G&H and they took it just fine which he predicted they would. They questioned it a bit, I explained that I moved within the same town and they went right ahead and sold me the gun.

I guess it's one of those things that varies by town and even by the store you go to. The simple address change shouldn't necessitate all the reference paperwork again!

This is the one reason I drag my feet on moving from the dump I live in.

The address HAS to match your drivers license.

I plan on moving this year. One thing I am thinking about doing is going to DMV and getting a duplicate drivers license before I move. That way I will have two copies of the DL with the current address. After I move and change the DL address I will then have a one DL with the same address as the FID. The downside is if they cross reference the DL address at a firearms purchase I will be in trouble.

It depends on three things. 1) how quickly the old town sends the records to the new town. 2)the turnaround from your references. 3) The policy set by the chief of police.

The third thing is the main factor. The policy of most PD's (not necessarily individual officers)is that they should be the only ones with guns. There is a little thing called The Second Amendment that prevents them from completly denying gun ownership. However, they can use the FID to make it difficult.

I just had mine changed. You don't need references. I just had to fill out paperwork with new address and return it with FID card. Then it gets sent to your old town they do stuff and send it back to your new town.Police told me it would take about 3 weeks(took 4) and cost $5.Just moved from Garfield to Wallington.

I've had mine over 20 years. You have to understand that every town is different.
