Last year I hit a rock with my prop and chewed it up a little. Can I just file it or does someone have to do it? Someone told me that the prop has to be filed correctly or it will throw it out of balance,is this true?

dont mess with your prop, have a professional fix it. it could be off just slightly and mess you all up.
also i would buy myself a spare to keep on the boat you can even get one in a polycarbonate (plastic) to get you back in.
good luck DBUCK.

I've never seen them, where can I buy one?

I have another question.

I have a 15hp pushing a 16 foot boat and it's a dog,I don't expect it to be a speed demon but is there a differant kind of prop that I can buy to pick up the speed a little bit?

when you bring your prop to the guy ask him about a different pitch ,it might help you gain more speed

Dbuck, go to stanleys in White right on 46 on the corner of 519. He can help you. I have 9.9 on my 16ft boat and I have 2 props, the second is a higher pitch and the top speed of the boat is alot better. It also plains out nicer with new prop.

Tim,
Awhile back I ordered a new prop for my 9.9 mariner. I ordered a different size than the standard one(my fault) and it actually slowed the boat down. Stanleys marine should be able to get you the right one.

dbuck, I have starcraft 16ft camp. 9.9 yamaha, front foot control minn kota and rear 55 lb min kota. I might sell it though. I never have time to use it. I am not sure of the pitch of new prop, I will check it out when I get a chance. Also motor has a planing wing on it. This helps keep front end down. I forgot what they really call it but it works.

Definitely send it out.  If the prop is out of balance your will run through the prop shaft bearings and potentially damage the prop shaft itself.  Replacing the prop shaft can be a $1,000 repair depending on the size of the motor.

You should also be very cautious in changing the pitch or diameter of the prop.  There are a number of factors to consider when making such a change.  Your should really consult a pro.

DBuck, you can find that (poly) prop in cabelas or bass pro catalog. just find the model and horsepower you have.
good luck

Watch chaceing the pitch. It will cause a faster RPM rate that will overheat the block & wind up warping it. The standard prop may not give you speed but it will give the motor a longer life.

think of changing the pitch the same thing as adding aftermarket produts to your car, might improve performance but might cause other problems in the long run

Not on small props we file them or grind them all the time on past river runners. Biger boats require the proper pitch and need to be proffesionally repaired and balanced to keep the pitch and cup correct. Small props are cheap enough to buy if peices are knocked off. If she just needs a little trim should be fine. Look just try it what do you have to loose and take it for a spin. If you got vibration then its no good and change the prop. Put your spare prop on. We all should have them?
