NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / Butcher Reviews & Information / Taxidermists & Butchers: Pa Deer?
Posted:  09 Feb 2007 1:00 PM
As I'm thinking of accepting a position that would put me in central Pennsylvania twice a week, and therefore back to my old hunting grounds in Huntingdon County .....

I was listening to this guy hanging around Harry's that NJ taxidermists won't accept a Pa buck because there would be no official state possession tag (no check stations). And just don't want to get involved with it.

And butchers in NJ are worried about disease from out of state deer .... CWD, etc ... and don't want Pa deer either.

I think there are taxidermists and butchers on this forum. Was that guy at Harry's just blowing hot air?

Thanks.

Yes he was.
If I brought something in to you from a buck I got in Pa ..... you would not want any official documentation from me? There are no check stations in Pa. Just my Pa hunting license would do? Or would I need to seek out a Pa biologist and get some sort of documentation?

Thanks.

JL47,

Killer and I have butchered both PA and NY deer this yr. We also both hunt in PA. As far as Taxidermists go in NJ..Rich did 2 PA mounts for us last summer.

The guy at Harrys is full of hot air.

Thanks guys. I figured the guy was a blow hard .... he just hangs around all the time looking at the same guns over and over. A pain in the butt!

But it got me thinking a little bit. I really don't know how the system works (I've never had anything mounted ) but I thought that maybe DFW would always want to see a possession tag on deer brought in. Does DFG ever "pop in" on taxidermists and look for poached deer or anything?

That goes to show what living and hunting in NJ will do to you. I started thinking the same thing, that I would have to prove I did nothing illegal and that it was a PA deer. I', almost afraid too fill out the tag for fear of doing it wrong and catching he@@ for it!

As long as you fill in the PA  ear tag and the Harvest Report Card and send it in to the PA Game Commission you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
